Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) seeks a Crime Laboratory Evidence Technician to perform advanced laboratory evidence duties, including receipt, storage, disposal, and documentation of items.

The role supports laboratory staff, maintains inventory in LIMS, and ensures compliance with court orders and regulations. Strong attention to detail, data entry skills, and proficiency with MS Office are required.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs advanced (senior-level) laboratory evidence technician duties to include receiving, storing, returning, and/or destroying crime evidence items according to court orders or to comply with applicable statutes and properly and accurately documenting transactions involving evidence receipt, disposition, inventory, and destruction. Assists laboratory personnel with inventory, disposition, and destruction of evidence stored in the laboratory vaults. May assist with the ordering of supplies and chemicals, and maintain supply order records. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

The following Military Occupational Specialty codes are generally applicable to this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS

Education - High School Diploma/equivalent required.

Experience - Minimum of six (6) months progressively responsible experience in a business or laboratory environment recording data, transferring items, conducting inventory, weighing materials, and receiving/filing items for analysis or minimum of six (6) months progressively responsible experience in a law enforcement environment, preferably handling evidence (receipt, destruction, inventory, etc.).

Substitution Note: Successful completion of fifteen (15) hours or more of college coursework in Criminal Justice or Forensic Science.

Licensure and/or Certification - May need to successfully complete certification as an Emissions Evaluator every six (6) months. May need to maintain smoke school certification and licensure through TCEQ. Must possess a valid driver license from state of residence.

Regulatory knowledge - Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures related to laboratory operations.

Interpersonal Skills - Must demonstrate the ability to exercise poise, tact, diplomacy and an ability to establish and maintain positive, working/professional relationships with internal/external customers.

Organizational and Prioritization Skills - Must be organized, flexible, and able to effectively prioritize in a multi-demand and constantly changing environment; able to meet multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines without sacrificing accuracy, timeliness or professionalism.

Presentation/Communication Skills - Must be able to construct and deliver clear, concise, and professional presentations/communications to a variety of audiences and/or individuals. Must be able to generate clear, concise, and grammatically correct notes.

Research and Comprehension - Must demonstrate the ability to quickly and efficiently access relevant information, and be able to utilize and/or present research and conclusions in a clear and concise manner.

Analytical Reasoning/Attention to Detail - Must demonstrate the ability to examine data/information, discern variations/similarities, and be able identify trends, relationships and causal factors, as well as grasp issues, draw accurate conclusions, and solve problems.

Technology (computers/hardware/software/operating systems) - Must possess appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems and be able to learn new software/systems. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Ability to use a keyboard and mouse on a laptop or desktop computer to generate typed work product (e.g., emails, submission data entry) at a proficient speed with minimal errors. Typing and/or data entry testing may be required.

Confidentiality and Protected Information - Must demonstrate the ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations, and adhere to applicable laws/statutes/policies related to access, maintenance and dissemination of information.

Safety - Must be able to work in a safe manner at all times, avoiding shortcuts that have potential adverse results/risks, and must be able to comply with safety standards and best practices.

Testing is required for candidates to be considered to go before the oral interview board and will be notified via email provided on the application. Candidates must qualify on the DPS issued typing test with a minimum of 40 words per minute net speed.

Current DPS employees who submit applications for posted DPS positions shall notify their immediate supervisor in writing.

A DPS employee who is selected for a position in the same salary group and state title as their current position will be transferred with no salary change.

A DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase of no more than 3.4% over their current salary regardless of posted salary.

Salary is contingent upon qualifications and is subject to salary administration and budgetary restrictions.
