Doyle - Micro Computer Technician I - 1.0 FTE with MMSD in Madison, WI is a frontline tech support role responsible for troubleshooting Windows desktop and school-owned devices, imaging, and on-site maintenance across MMSD schools.

Under the supervision of the Tech User Manager, you will configure hardware, assist staff, document work, and travel to district sites to ensure reliable technology services for students and staff.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Micro computing technology or commensurate experience.
  • One year of experience providing technical support and training to staff, students, or office users of personal computers, network hardware and software and office technologies including Google applications, Microsoft Office Suite, email and related systems.
  • Valid driver's license and provision of own transportation among schools.
  • Experience performing on-site field hardware upgrades, technical trouble-shooting and software installation (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot end-user software and hardware problems within a networked environment and elevate complex issues as appropriate.
  • Perform on-site setup, problem-solving, and operation of desktop systems.
  • Replace defective equipment in a timely manner to ensure continued end-user productivity.
  • Perform computer imaging and hardware upgrades to maintain district standards.
  • Record all work and resolutions accurately in the electronic work order and problem tracking database (Incident IQ).

The Madison Metropolitan School District is the second largest school district in Wisconsin. The district serves a beautifully diverse population of more than 25,000 students. Purpose Of Position

Under the general supervision of the Tech User Manager or Instructional Tech User Manager, and working with other technical staff, troubleshoot end-user software and hardware problems within a network environment for Windows users of Microsoft Suite applications. Provide on-site assistance for MMSD schools. Work with other technical staff and school computer contacts to determine individual school computer hardware and software maintenance needs. Work includes setup, problem-solving, and operation of computer servers and desktop systems.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Technical Support & Hardware Maintenance 45%
  • Troubleshoot routine end-user software and hardware problems within a networked environment and elevate complex issues as appropriate
  • Perform on-site setup, problem-solving, and operation of desktop systems.
  • Replace defective equipment in a timely manner to ensure continued end-user productivity.
  • Perform computer imaging and hardware upgrades to maintain district standards.
  • User Support 30%
  • Educate staff on IT best practices and policies, such as secure file sharing and password management.
  • Perform Help Desk duties as scheduled, maintaining clear communication with end-users during equipment failures or system downtime.
  • Coordinate with technicians and instructional staff to ensure consistent support for end-users, aligning troubleshooting efforts with established organizational software standards.
  • Administration & Systems Documentation 20%
  • Record all work and resolutions accurately in the electronic work order and problem tracking database (Incident IQ).
  • Collaborate with technicians and the Documentation Lead to maintain accurate, up-to-date desktop configurations and system changes for team use.
  • Collaborate with Help Desk and other technical staff to determine school-specific hardware and software maintenance needs and mobilize resources as required.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by executive leadership or their representatives or designees.
  • Attend district and school functions that support MMSD’s strategic framework, initiatives, and core values.
  • Complete any and all district-required training.
  • Build collaborative relationships with business partners.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Intel-based, desktop computers.
  • Knowledge of Chrome OS and Chromebooks.
  • Knowledge of Windows-based applications.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word & Excel).
  • Ability to work one on one with staff, assist with software troubleshooting, and guidance on proper usage.
  • Knowledge of basic networking concepts within a Microsoft network environment .
  • Knowledge of computer imaging and device deployment processes.
  • Ability to follow established technology standards, asset management procedures, and device lifecycle practices when installing, maintaining, or replacing equipment
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with team members and a diverse group of staff and users
  • Demonstrated ability to proficiently troubleshoot micro-computing hardware, software and networks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage a variety of projects concurrently in a service-oriented environment
  • Experience working cross-culturally and or commitment to work toward improving one's own cultural competence, i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one's skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas.

Physical Requirements

Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors is minimal and poses little to no risk of injury. This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally and may involve walking, sitting, stooping or reaching. Manual dexterity is necessary for completing general tasks while operating office equipment. This position may require being stationary for extended periods of time and sustaining prolonged visual concentration. The ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, sounds, odors and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks is also required.

Ability to perform work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments throughout the year, including in inclement weather, spaces without air conditioning and areas where temperatures may be uncomfortable or fluctuate rapidly.

Working Conditions
  • Work requires travel to different locations within the district and to off-site meetings.
  • The position requires working out of various schools to provide services to students and staff.
