Job summary

Wheeling Hospital is looking for a Medical Dosimetrist to join our radiation oncology team in Wheeling, West Virginia. The successful candidate will have specialized expertise in radiation therapy treatment planning and knowledge of cancer management.

Responsibilities include designing treatment plans, performing dose calculations, and maintaining patient records. Candidates must be board eligible for the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board exam, with a preference for those certified and with three years of experience.

Qualifications

The Medical Dosimetrist is a member of the radiation oncology team with specialized expertise in radiation therapy treatment planning and knowledge of cancer management, radiation biology, physics, safety, anatomy, physiology, and mathematics to generate treatment plans. The Dosimetrist communicates plans to the Radiation Oncologist and Radiation Therapist and contributes to plan accuracy, safety, and problem resolution.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be board eligible for the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board (MDCB) exam. Must obtain MDCB certification within one (1) year of hire.
  • State criminal background check and Federal checks as required for regulated areas.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Medical Dosimetrist through the MDCB.
  • Completion of a formal medical dosimetry program accredited by JRCERT.
Experience
  • Three (3) years of medical dosimetry experience.
  • Experience with Varian Eclipse and ARIA.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assemble data to identify and contour normal and dose-limiting structures; proficient in image registration (CT, MRI, PET).
  • Design treatment plans with optimal beam geometry to deliver prescribed doses while sparing critical structures.
  • Create and transfer reference images and localization markers for portal verification and treatment delivery (DRRs, CBCTs, IGRT).
  • Supervise or assist in simulations and tumor localization using CT, MRI, and PET.
  • Supervise, perform, or assist in planning and implementing fabrication of compensation filters, shields, wedges, and other beam-modifying devices.
  • Assist in planning and manufacturing immobilization devices and molds/casts.
  • Communicate with radiation therapists and advise on immobilization devices, compensators, field arrangement, and imaging parameters.
  • Develop optimal treatment strategies including tumor localization, isodose distributions, and dose calculations per directive.
  • Maintain evaluation of treatment plans using DVHs and related data to determine plan appropriateness.
  • Perform dose calculations, document patient records, and verify calculation accuracy.
  • Maintain accurate transfer and documentation of treatment parameters per departmental policies.
  • Provide technical support to Medical Physicist in radiation safety, machine calibrations, QA of plans and equipment.
  • Operate QA on treatment planning computers under direction of the Medical Physicist.
  • Supervise or assist in patient/beam dosimetry as directed by the Medical Physicist.
  • Assist in brachytherapy procedures with planning and dose calculations.
  • Participate in quality improvement through periodic checks as indicated by the supervising medical physicist.
