Waukekan Community Unit School District No. 60 seeks a K-8 Diverse Learner Coordinator to oversee special education supports for elementary and middle schools.

This role reports to the Director of Diverse Learners and collaborates with district leadership to implement IEPs and compliant practices. The coordinator leads instructional leadership, monitors practices, coordinates procedures, and provides professional development and coaching to teachers and staff to improve outcomes for students

Qualifications

• LBS I and General Administrative Endorsements required.

Who We Are:

Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 serves nearly 13,000 students in preschool through grade 12 and is located halfway between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. The District has one early learning center, 15 elementary schools, five middle schools and a high school program divided between two 9- 12th grade campuses. The District encompasses portions of Waukegan, Beach Park and Park City.

What We Need:

The K-8 Diverse Learner Coordinator is responsibile for ovrseeing programs and implementation of special education supports and sevices for students with disabilities in the Elementary and Middle Schools. The special education coordinator is directly responsible to the Director and Assistnat Directors of Diverse Learners and indirectly responsible to the Senior Legan Compliance and Supports Officer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Develop, coordinate, evaluate, and supervise special education programs within assigned locations and programs in cooperation with High School Administration;
2. In cooperation with the Director of Diverse Learners and High School Administrators, provide coordination of procedures, reports, and policy for the district;
3. Provide instructional leadership including monitoring instructional practices, providing professional development and coaching individual teachers as necessary;
4. Work with Department Chairpersons to establish teaching standards for special education students that are aligned with Common Core Standards, IL Learning Standards and College Readiness Standards;
5. Work in coordination with teachers and administration to implement special education programs and services including behavior programs consistent with the educational philosophy and goals of the School Board;
6. Oversee the IEP process including attending IEP meetings as necessary, providing technical support for the development of IEPs and coordinating the attendance of required IEP participants;
7. Participate in Problem Solving Teams and consult with staff members regarding appropriate interventions, modifications and adaptations;
8. Provide reports and recommendations for placement in programs or services to the Director of Diverse Learners;
9. Participate as a team member in the identification of social/behavioral problems and assist in the design, implementation and follow up on behavior intervention plans and programs for individuals and groups of students;
10. Plan and confer with classroom teachers and administration as requested concerning any behavioral, social, or personal problems affecting students;
11. Serve as a resource for crisis intervention by assisting with the development of crisis prevention and safety plans and participating in crisis intervention activities;
12. Develop and conduct in-service activities for staff including educational assistants regarding best practices in behavior management techniques and the remediation of student behavioral, social and behavioral problems;
13. Collaborate with Principals and Assistant Principals regarding disciplinary matters for students with disabilities, as needed;
14. Assist with the selection of highly qualified special education personnel;
15. Provide oversight in the assignment of teachers and educational assistants in coordination with the High School Administration and Director of Diverse Learners;
16. Confer with principals on personnel matters including the evaluation of probationary and tenured staff in accordance with District policies and procedures;
17. Participate in the development of the high school master schedule;
18. Train teaching staff on the usage of the computerized IEP system and ensure that special education data is recorded and reported accurately;
19. Supervise summer special education high school ESY programs;
20. Continue professional growth through memberships in professional organizations, reading professional literature and exchanging ideas with other professionals;
21. Serve as a member of designated district and building level teams and participate in any other assigned meetings as related to position;
22. Complete other duties as assigned by the Director of Diverse Learners or designee.

Qualifications:

1. Must have a valid Illinois Professional Educators License, Grade 9-12.
2. Must have LBS I and General Administrative Endorsements.
