Job summary

Xcel Energy is seeking interns to support the System Planning Modeling & Analytics Organization, in Denver, CO. The internship focuses on electric distribution modeling, data quality, and planning analyses to support grid modernization and electrification goals.

The program offers hands‑on training, opportunities to present to senior leadership, and collaboration with internal stakeholders. Start date is May 31, 2027 with potential extension based on performance, hybrid in‑person work, and

  • Current student, Junior or higher (as of Fall 2027)
  • Enrolled in ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering (plus for power systems engineering program) or Computer Science & Data Analytics
  • Able to work full‑time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in‑person, per our hybrid work policy.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in validation and analysis of SCADA measurement data.
  • Contribute to utility planning activities.
  • Gain an understanding of GIS, EMS, CIS and other critical utility systems.
  • Power systems modeling, hosting capacity analysis, and time series data analysis.

Xcel Energy is seeking candidates to support our System Planning Modeling & Analytics Organization, specifically, within our Electric Distribution Modeling & Analytics team in Denver, CO. The paid internship provides an opportunity to showcase your abilities in an engineering team which develops and maintains electrical circuit models used for planning and analysis of the distribution grid and supports utility goals such as electrification, reliability, and grid modernization by improving model accuracy, automation, and data quality. The program provides practical work experience to develop your existing skillset, present to senior leadership, and collaborate with key internal stakeholders. Each intern will be relied upon to play a role in achieving department objectives and goals. The program will allow you to apply what you’ve learned in school and further enhance your knowledge through hands‑on training and provide opportunities to network and learn with other interns across the organization.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
  • Participate in validation and analysis of SCADA measurement data.

This position is for a May 31, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Current student, Junior or higher (as of Fall 2027)
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering (plus for power systems engineering program) or Computer Science & Data Analytics
  • Able to work full‑time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in‑person, per our hybrid work policy.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher
  • Experience or Proficiency with python or data analysis tools
  • Completion of at least one circuits course

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $21.20 to $23.20 per hour. This position is eligible for the following benefits: Pension, 401(k) plan, Paid time off (PTO), Holidays
