Job summary

BHMG Engineers, Inc. seeks an early-career Distribution Line Engineer to develop overhead/underground distribution line designs and coordinate projects.

The role involves mentoring junior staff, collaborating with survey and field teams, and ensuring adherence to NESC/RUS standards. Work arrangement is on-site or hybrid across Saint Louis, MO or nearby office locations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or related ABET-accredited discipline.
• Typically 2+ years of relevant distribution line design or utility engineering experience.
• FE/EIT preferred or in progress.

Responsibilities

• Independently develop distribution line designs using utility GIS platforms, pole loading software, and related tools; produce drawings, staking sheets, BOMs and documentation.
• Perform calculations to ensure compliance with NESC, RUS, and client standards.
• Coordinate with survey, field and real estate teams to incorporate measurements and easement information into design.
• Identify permitting requirements and assist with exhibits and applications.
• Conduct pole loading analysis and basic structural checks for distribution facilities.

About The Role

Designed for an early career individual, the Distribution Line Engineer role offers the opportunity to develop specialized expertise in overhead and underground distribution line design, project coordination, and early mentorship responsibilities.

This position is an on-site or hybrid position in any of our office locations: St. Louis, MO; Collinsville, IL; or Bettendorf, IA.

You Will

• Independently develop distribution line designs using utility GIS platforms, pole loading software, and related engineering tools; produce construction drawings, staking sheets, bills of material, and technical documentation.
• Perform detailed engineering analysis and calculations to ensure compliance with NESC, RUS, and client-specific distribution standards.
• Evaluate routing, pole placement, equipment selection, and constructability considerations, including ROW requirements, clearances, and loading conditions.
• Coordinate with survey, field personnel, and real estate teams to incorporate field measurements, as-built data, and easement information into design.
• Identify and support permitting requirements (DOT, railroad, local jurisdictions) and assist with preparing exhibits, applications, and supporting materials.
• Conduct pole loading analysis, guying design, underground conduit/duct bank design, and basic structural checks for distribution facilities.
• Review and finalize material assemblies, transformer/switchgear placements, and construction configurations for complete IFC design packages.
• Support client meetings, cross-discipline coordination, and field visits for design validation, site assessment, and construction support.
• Contribute to continuous improvement efforts, standards development, design templates, and technical initiatives within the distribution engineering team.
• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers, designers, and drafters.

Requirements

Education/Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related ABET-accredited engineering discipline required.
• Typically, 2 or more years of relevant experience in distribution line design or utility engineering. Equivalent combinations of training, practical experience, and performance will also be considered.
• FE/EIT preferred or in progress.

Desired Skills & Attributes

• Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel), AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and utility design tools (GIS, pole loading software such as PLS-CADD/POLE, etc.).
• Solid understanding of distribution line design principles, NESC/RUS compliance, construction standards, pole loading, and material assemblies.
• Strong problem-solving, coordination, communication, and documentation skills.
• Ability to mentor junior technical staff and contribute to standards, workflow improvements, and team development.

At BHMG, our pay ranges are broad to allow for movement within our organization and to accommodate different skill sets and levels of expertise. The pay range for this position is $85,000 - $115,000 annual. This range encompasses multiple levels of the role. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the pay range. This position is eligible to earn additional compensation including extra effort pay and an annual bonus incentive based on individual and company performance. Career level and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. We take into consideration a variety of factors including, but not limited to, skills, abilities, experience, education, credentials, and internal equity when determining the base salary offered.
