Job description

Position Overview

The Distribution Engineering Designer II (DED II) is the second level of the DED career track, responsible for developing designs for electrical distribution systems, including overhead and underground circuits for joint use, lighting, and commercial, industrial, and residential development. The role involves using technical skills and field data collection to complete design work and assist with storm restoration when requested. The DED II works primarily in an office environment but also performs significant on‑site field work, exposing the employee to various weather conditions and safety hazards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Produce electric distribution design drawings and Bill Of Material (BOM) necessary for the construction of moderate complexity projects.
  • Perform field data collection using standard tools, methods and processes and conduct necessary project‑specific inspections accurately and efficiently.
  • Become familiar with cable pulling calculations, cable voltage drop calculations, transformer loading calculations, and pole loading analysis calculations.
  • Gain familiarity with client construction standards, construction and workflow processes, and customer charging guidelines, as required.
  • Generate permitting and other project‑supporting documentation, as needed.
  • Understand the hazards and dangers of the distribution system and how to mitigate them during office and field work.
  • Actively look out for others’ safety in all aspects of this work.
  • Attend and engage in scheduled safety meetings and adhere to driving and site hazard identification, mitigation and reporting training.
  • Possess the ability to work on a storm response local or travel team as an Assessor and Team Lead Learner.
Qualifications
  • Four‑year ABET‑accredited Engineering degree and two years of relevant experience. Passing the Fundamentals Exam (FE) can count as six months of relevant experience.
  • FE is desired.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Pre‑employment drug screening and background check are conditions of employment. Motor vehicle checks may be required based upon position.
