Job summary

Job Description

Orbital Engineering, Inc. is currently seeking a Distribution Design Supervisor for a remote work position. This role requires experience with Joint Use and Electrical Distribution Design to directly support projects within the department’s pole attachment application process and power delivery improvement process. The team analyzes requests for attachment to client poles and network reliability improvements on client electric distribution systems, and supports GIS data analytics, notifications, work orders, invoicing and financial reports using ERP software.

Essential Functions
  • Plans, directs, and coordinates activities of team personnel to deliver projects on time and on budget while accomplishing the goals and objectives of the projects.
  • Directs or provides technical leadership to the team for engineering design and construction functions within assigned projects.
  • Utilizes thorough understanding of NESC Standards, Client Standards, State or Local Municipal Guidelines, and/or applicable guidelines to manage team through engineering designs (Pole Replacements, Communication Space Rearrangements, Joint-Use Design) for possible joint-use or make-ready construction.
  • Manages team productivity and ensures projects are closed out and invoiced accordingly.
  • Supports leadership team with client onboarding, contract negotiations, and extended relationship development to grow Orbital UII business.
  • Schedules work according to contractual agreements and assigns team personnel to appropriately meet team needs.
  • Responsible for development of customer proposals, including detailed technical scope, schedule, budget, and resource management.
  • Regularly interfaces directly with clients or contractors to ensure department projects are executed in alignment with scope.
  • Communicates potential strategic initiatives or team risks to internal management team.
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders to ensure team has necessary resources to remain productive and effective.
  • Provides personnel orientation, training, mentorship, coaching, and disciplinary action.
  • Completes quality assurance practices on team deliverables to ensure highest quality product possible.
  • Conducts performance evaluations for department team members.
  • Work is mainly office based but fieldwork may be needed throughout the engineering design, construction, and quality assurance process.
  • Willing to travel overnight or for extended periods of time, based on project assignment.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or equivalent technical discipline with 3+ years of experience in the utility industry, engineering design, and/or project management.
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or Business Administration preferred.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) License and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) preferred.
  • Supervisory experience of 0‑2 years.
  • Thorough and working knowledge of electrical distribution assets and/or communication equipment construction.
  • Experience managing multiple projects with competing priorities while maintaining schedule and budget.
  • Ability to negotiate and develop relationships with current and new clients or contracting parties.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement process improvements with measurable results in moving departmental initiatives forward.
  • Exceptional analytical and decision‑making skills, and ability to communicate with all levels of the organization.
  • Detail‑oriented, strong organization skills, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities while maintaining an effective team.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software applications.
  • Experience analyzing data and preparing departmental financial reporting.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings/schematics.
  • Knowledge or experience in utility Long Term Infrastructure Improvement Programs (LTIIP) preferred.
  • Experience within the Joint‑Use industry with understanding of FCC Guidelines preferred.
  • Experience in financial analysis and departmental budget management, including financial reporting and department auditing.
  • Experience in pole loading (Spida Calc, O‑Calc, Pole Foreman, or Katapult) or other construction modeling software (AutoCAD) beneficial.
  • Knowledge of industry utility or joint‑use software such as Katapult, SPANS, NJUNS, IkeGPS for make‑ready engineering and construction beneficial.
  • Must have dependable transportation and a valid driver’s license with insurance.
  • Position requires the ability to pass a post‑offer drug and alcohol test, and is subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.
Location Note

This is a remote position. Compensation is based on market data and internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate’s location.

Salary Range

$70,000‑110,000 annually (based on experience, qualifications, and location).
