Job summary

Capital One is seeking a Distinguished Engineer to lead the Decisioning Platform with architectural guidance and hands-on development. You will shape a scalable, multi-tenant workflow platform across card, lending and banking products.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
• 7+ years hands-on full stack or backend technologist experience.
• 5+ years coding in Java, Python, Go.
• 5+ years in software engineering, architecture, or site reliability engineering.
• 3+ years cloud-native experience (AWS, Azure, GCP).
• Master's Degree in CS or related field preferred.
• 10+ years end-to-end system development experience preferred.
• 8+ years designing large-scale, resilient apps preferred.
• 3+ years experience with large-scale platform solutioning.
• Familiarity with AI agents and orchestration is a plus.

Distinguished Engineer (Decisioning Platform)

Capital One’s Card Decisioning Platform team is responsible to enable our business to manage risk and drive business value across the customer lifecycle by providing real-time, accurate , secure and AI powered decision-making solutions for customer transactions, fraud detection, alerts, credit inquiries and applications across card, lending and banking products.

In this role, you will work with our decisioning platform squads to provide architectural guidance and technical leadership to help build the destination workflow orchestration for capital one. You will be a thought leader in this space to ensure we are building a world class platform that is scalable, resilient, multi-tenant and can support a variety of use cases in a frictionless manner catering to business users, engineers and analysts needs

You will work with other Distinguished Engineers, Engineering leaders and Product partners to detail out design solutions and work closely with Software engineers to develop and engineer the products as envisioned by creating POCs, working with spec and code. Most of your time will be spent on writing code, reviewing PRs, and delivering code at a faster pace. You will be responsible to help the teams with setting up the best in the industry engineering culture and developer experience while also helping to remove technical impediments faced by your teams.. Additionally, you will provide mentorship and strategic guidance to our engineer, product, and leadership groups.

• Ability to apply the right level of judgement on delegation of work to mentor individual contributors and thereby help to mentor and coach next generation of distinguished engineers

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree
• At least 7 years of experience as hands on full stack or backend technologist
• At least 5 years of professional experience coding in commonly used languages like Java, Python, Go
• At least 5 years of experience in software engineering, architecture, solution architecture, site reliability engineering
• At least 3 years of experience in cloud native technologies (AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related field
• 10+ years of professional experience in the full lifecycle of system development, from conception through architecture, implementation, testing, deployment and production support
• 8+ years of experience in designing large scale and resilient applications
• 3+ years of experience with solutioning a large scale platform
• Familiarity with AI agents, agent orchestration and architecture

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $269,100 - $307,200 for Distinguished EngineerNew York, NY: $293,600 - $335,100 for Distinguished EngineerRichmond, VA: $244,700 - $279,200 for Distinguished Engineer

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
