Job description

Job Description

Set architecture and technical direction

  • Define the end-to-end technical architecture and multi-year evolution of OCI’s Compute and AI infrastructure platform.

  • Drive architectural decisions that span servers, accelerators, host systems, networking, racks, clusters, datacenters, and cloud control-plane interfaces.

  • Identify cross-layer opportunities where coordinated hardware, networking, software, and datacenter design can materially improve performance, reliability, cost, efficiency, or deployment velocity.

  • Establish architectural principles and mechanisms that allow OCI infrastructure to scale across generations of CPUs, GPUs and accelerators, network technologies, server platforms, and datacenter designs.

  • Anticipate technology inflection points and translate them into concrete platform investments and engineering roadmaps.

  • Make architecture decisions that account for hyperscale realities, including fleet heterogeneity, hardware lifecycle, fault domains, power and cooling constraints, supply chain, regional expansion, and total cost of ownership.

Lead across organizational boundaries

  • Serve as a senior technical leader across Compute, Server & Hardware Engineering, Cluster Networking, Datacenter Engineering, and AI Infrastructure.

  • Resolve high-impact architectural issues where the optimal system-level solution crosses individual organizational ownership boundaries.

  • Build alignment among senior engineers, engineering leaders, product teams, operations teams, and executives around difficult technical tradeoffs.

  • Create durable technical mechanisms, including architecture reviews, design principles, interfaces, standards, and operating models, that improve decision-making across the organization.

  • Partner closely with other Distinguished Architects, Distinguished Engineers, and senior technical leaders across OCI to ensure infrastructure architecture is coherent end to end.

  • Provide technical leadership on major infrastructure investments and decisions with long-term impact on OCI’s cost structure, capacity, performance, and competitive differentiation.

Build infrastructure for AI and cloud scale

  • Shape architectures for large-scale CPU and accelerator-based compute fleets, including high-density AI clusters.

  • Drive system-level optimization across compute, memory, storage, networking, power, cooling, and physical infrastructure.

  • Influence server and rack architecture, cluster topology, network design, fault domains, capacity models, and deployment architecture.

  • Ensure infrastructure is designed for extreme scale while preserving isolation, security, serviceability, operability, and predictable performance.

  • Develop architectures that enable rapid introduction of new hardware platforms and technologies without creating unsustainable operational complexity.

  • Design for the realities of hyperscale operation, including partial failure, fleet diversity, capacity pressure, rapid expansion, hardware refresh, and large-scale recovery.

Solve the hardest technical problems

  • Personally engage in the organization’s most complex and consequential technical challenges.

  • Dive deeply across hardware and software boundaries to identify root causes and systemic solutions.

  • Use data, modeling, prototypes, and first-principles analysis to evaluate architectural alternatives.

  • Identify problems that may be invisible at small scale but become dominant at hyperscale.

  • Challenge assumptions and simplify systems where complexity has accumulated across organizational or technology boundaries.

  • Lead technical response and architectural remediation for systemic reliability, performance, scalability, or efficiency issues when needed.

  • Translate lessons from large-scale production operations into better architecture, stronger standards, and simpler systems.

Raise the technical bar

  • Mentor and develop Principal and Distinguished-level technical leaders across the organization.

  • Create a culture of rigorous engineering judgment, clear technical writing, and evidence-based decision-making.

  • Raise the quality of architecture and design reviews across multiple engineering organizations.

  • Identify gaps in technical leadership and incubate new technical initiatives that may not have an obvious organizational home.

  • Represent OCI’s infrastructure architecture with key technology partners and, where appropriate, the broader technical community.

  • Help establish a common architectural vocabulary and set of principles across hardware, networking, systems software, and datacenter engineering.

Responsibilities

We are looking for a Distinguished Architect with substantial first-hand experience designing and operating infrastructure at hyperscale. The ideal candidate has helped shape infrastructure for a major cloud, AI platform, or similarly large-scale technology environment and has repeatedly made consequential architectural decisions across hardware, networking, systems software, and datacenter infrastructure.

  • Significant experience architecting and operating infrastructure at hyperscale, ideally in a major cloud provider, large-scale AI infrastructure environment, or comparable global infrastructure organization.

  • Deep expertise in one or more infrastructure domains, such as large-scale compute systems, server architecture, distributed systems, high-performance networking, accelerator infrastructure, or datacenter architecture, combined with demonstrated ability to operate effectively across the broader stack.

  • A track record of defining architecture for large, complex systems used at significant production scale.

  • Experience designing infrastructure spanning very large fleets, clusters, datacenters, or regions where scale materially changes system behavior and architectural tradeoffs.

  • Deep understanding of fleet-level architecture, including failure domains, capacity management, hardware lifecycle, deployment automation, observability, serviceability, and large-scale operational recovery.

  • Experience with the architectural implications of hyperscale infrastructure, including power and cooling constraints, network topology, hardware diversity, supply chain realities, regional expansion, and total cost of ownership.

  • Strong understanding of the interactions among hardware architecture, operating systems, virtualization, networking, distributed systems, and physical infrastructure.

  • Experience designing infrastructure for demanding workloads where performance, reliability, efficiency, cost, and deployment velocity must be optimized simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and solve problems that emerge only at very large fleet or cluster scale.

  • Experience translating lessons from operating at scale into simpler architectures, stronger standards, and better cross-layer design.

  • Exceptional technical judgment and the ability to make high-quality decisions under ambiguity.

  • Ability to communicate complex architecture clearly to engineers, senior technical leaders, and executives.

  • A track record of influencing engineering strategy without relying on direct organizational authority.

  • Experience leading technical initiatives spanning multiple engineering organizations and disciplines.

  • Significant experience developing other senior technical leaders and raising engineering standards across organizations.

Relevant Experience

Experience with large-scale GPU and accelerator infrastructure, high-performance cluster networking, custom server platforms, or hyperscale datacenter systems is particularly relevant.

Scope and Impact

  • Multiple infrastructure organizations and engineering disciplines.

  • Architecture spanning hardware through cloud services.

  • Multi-year technology and infrastructure roadmaps.

  • Major capital and engineering investments.

  • Platforms supporting some of OCI’s largest cloud and AI deployments.

  • Technical standards and engineering practices used across the infrastructure organization.

  • Cross-layer architectural decisions that affect OCI’s performance, reliability, cost, capacity, and ability to scale.

Success in this role is measured not only by individual technical contributions, but by the architect’s ability to make the entire OCI Compute & AI Infrastructure organization more technically effective, improving architecture, accelerating execution, reducing systemic complexity, and enabling Oracle to build differentiated infrastructure at hyperscale.
