Job summary

Friendship Shelter, Inc. is seeking a Disability Benefits Specialist to help individuals experiencing homelessness access SSI/SSDI benefits. This field-based role uses the SOAR model to strengthen applications and connect clients with income resources.

Responsibilities include coordinating with healthcare providers, gathering documents, and following up on applications while maintaining person-centered advocacy and thorough records to promote housing stability and independence.

Qualifications

• Experience assisting with disability benefit applications (SSI, SSDI).
• SOAR certification preferred.
• Experience with homelessness or related services.
• Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, current insurance.
• Familiarity with Orange County Continuum of Care preferred.
• Commitment to serving vulnerable populations and housing stability.

Responsibilities

• Provide field-based benefit advocacy including assessment, documentation, application prep, submission, and follow-up.
• Guide clients through the SSI/SSDI process with dignity and self-determination.
• Utilize SOAR, including Medical Summary Reports, to improve outcomes.
• Coordinate with teams to align advocacy with housing and service plans.
• Accompany clients to appointments and hearings as needed.
