Job summary

Nehslo Animation Studios seeks a Freelance Director to own the creative vision and execution across productions ranging from feature films to short-form content. You will lead with cinematic storytelling, guide multi-disciplinary teams, and ensure cohesive, emotionally resonant results.

This is a remote, project-based engagement with potential recurring opportunities. You will collaborate with Producers, department heads, and leadership to translate briefs into finished work, maintaining tone

Qualifications

• Proven directing experience across film, television, animation, or mixed-media storytelling.
• Strong command of cinematic language, performance direction, and visual storytelling.
• Ability to lead and align multi-disciplinary creative teams toward a shared vision.
• Experience working across pre-production, production, and post in a directing capacity.
• Clear and effective communication skills in remote, cross-departmental environments.
• A portfolio or reel demonstrating directorial range and creative point of view.

Responsibilities

• Defining the overall tone, pacing, visual language, and performance direction for assigned productions.
• Collaborating with Story, VizDev, and Art Direction to establish and maintain creative alignment across departments.
• Directing talent, animators, and crew toward a unified creative vision.
• Overseeing storyboards, animatics, shot composition, and editorial continuity.
• Reviewing cuts, edits, and final deliverables for quality, tone, and story integrity.
• Serving as creative lead on client productions where directorial oversight is part of the engagement.

Nehslo Animation Studios is building a vetted Freelance Director Pool for upcoming animated and mixed-media productions. This pool will serve as a curated network of directors eligible for project-based engagement across original IP development, feature film, episodic series, short-form content, and client productions.

Position Description

As a Freelance Director, you will own the creative vision and execution of assigned productions. Whether leading a feature, an episodic run, or a short-form project, you’ll shape how a story is told — from the performances to the pacing to the final cut. You’ll work closely with Producers, Department Heads, and Studio Leadership to translate scripts and creative briefs into finished work that is visually cohesive and emotionally resonant. Depending on project scope and format, duties may include but are not limited to:

• 1. Defining the overall tone, pacing, visual language, and performance direction for assigned productions
• 2. Collaborating with Story, VizDev, and Art Direction to establish and maintain creative alignment across departments
• 3. Directing talent, animators, and crew toward a unified creative vision
• 4. Overseeing storyboards, animatics, shot composition, and editorial continuity
• 5. Reviewing cuts, edits, and final deliverables for quality, tone, and story integrity
• 6. Serving as creative lead on client productions where directorial oversight is part of the engagement

Required Skills & Experience

• Proven directing experience across film, television, animation, or mixed-media storytelling
• Strong command of cinematic language, performance direction, and visual storytelling
• Ability to lead and align multi-disciplinary creative teams toward a shared vision
• Experience working across pre-production, production, and post in a directing capacity
• Clear and effective communication skills in remote, cross-departmental environments

Preferred (But Not Required)

• Experience directing across multiple formats — features, episodic, short-form, or commercial
• Familiarity with 2D, hybrid, or mixed-media animation pipelines
• Experience on both original IP and client or work-for-hire productions
• Comfort working in values-driven or family-friendly narratives
• Familiarity with production tools such as Airtable, ShotGrid, Slack, or equivalent
