Mandate

BMO Capital Markets is seeking a Director, Strategy & Business Management to support the growth and operational effectiveness of its Cash Equities and Global Index & ETF businesses. As a trusted advisor to senior business leaders, the Director will drive strategy execution, business and financial performance, governance, regulatory initiatives, and operational improvement across the franchise.

Working across Sales, Trading, Research, Technology, Operations, Risk, Compliance, Legal, Finance, Human Resources, and Strategy & Business Management, the Director will translate priorities into executable plans, clarify accountability, and help the businesses achieve their growth, profitability, client, and risk objectives.

The role requires a commercially minded, collaborative leader with strong judgment, analytical capabilities, and the ability to influence senior stakeholders and deliver results in a fast-paced, highly regulated global markets environment.

Key Accountabilities

Business Strategy & Executive Support

• Partner with the Heads of Cash Equities and Global Index & ETF to define, communicate, and execute strategic priorities.
• Support the Global Equity Derivatives business in coordination with its Strategy & Business Manager.
• Lead annual and multi-year business planning, including growth priorities, resource allocation, investment decisions, and execution roadmaps.
• Prepare executive-level presentations, management reports, and strategic analyses for senior leadership and governance forums.

Business Performance & Financial Management

• Monitor business performance against financial, client, productivity, risk, and strategic objectives; identify performance drivers and recommend actions.
• Develop and maintain management reporting, dashboards, key performance indicators, and business analytics that support timely decision-making.
• Partner with Finance to lead budgeting, forecasting, expense management, headcount planning, and investment prioritization processes.
• Assess business cases for strategic investments, technology enhancements, vendor commitments, and growth initiatives, including expected benefits and delivery risks.
• Conduct competitive benchmarking and market analysis to identify growth opportunities, emerging risks, and changes in industry structure.

Strategic Initiatives & Transformation

• Lead complex strategic, regulatory, operational, and technology initiatives from concept through implementation, with clear objectives, milestones, dependencies, and measures of success.
• Drive programs that improve scalability, client experience, business efficiency, data quality, and operational resilience.
• Bridge front-office priorities and enabling functions to accelerate decisions, resolve issues, and sustain delivery momentum.
• Identify and advance opportunities to use automation, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and process redesign to improve effectiveness and reduce operational risk.
• Provide transparent reporting on initiative status, financial commitments, risks, decisions, and required management actions.

Organizational Effectiveness & Talent

• Partner with business leadership and Human Resources on workforce planning, organizational design, hiring priorities, and resource optimization.
• Support talent, succession, employee engagement, and culture initiatives across the franchise.
• Promote clear accountability, effective ways of working, and a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and disciplined execution.

Stakeholder Management

• Build trusted relationships across Global Equities, Global Markets, and enterprise support and control functions.
• Align stakeholders across regions and functions around business priorities, decisions, risks, and execution plans.
• Represent Global Equities in management forums, governance committees, and enterprise initiatives, as required.

Governance, Risk & Regulatory Management

• Coordinate a fit-for-purpose governance framework across the Cash Equities and Global Index & ETF businesses, with clear decision rights, escalation paths, and management information.
• Oversee the business response to regulatory initiatives, supervisory requirements, audit findings, and control-related actions, ensuring clear ownership and timely completion.
• Partner with Risk, Compliance, Legal, Supervision, and other control functions to maintain a strong, sustainable risk and control environment.
• Monitor regulatory and market structure developments and assess their potential impact on business strategy, operations, and clients.
• Support internal audits, regulatory examinations, risk assessments, and business continuity and operational resilience activities.

Qualifications

Education

• Undergraduate degree in Business, Economics, Finance, or a related discipline.
• MBA, CFA, CPA, CA, or an equivalent professional designation is considered an asset.

Experience and Required Skills

• Typically 10+ years of experience in Capital Markets, Global Markets, Business Management, front-office COO, Strategy, Finance, Management Consulting, or a related discipline.
• Deep understanding of equity markets, market structure, institutional trading, cash equities, ETFs, index products, and capital markets operations.
• Experience leading cross-functional initiatives and driving outcomes in a complex, matrixed environment.
• Strong commercial mindset and the ability to connect strategy, financial performance, risk, and execution.
• Excellent analytical, financial modeling, problem-solving, and business case development capabilities.
• Ability to manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgment, and elevate issues effectively.
• Advanced proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint; experience with management reporting, data visualization, and analytics tools.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to distill complex topics for senior audiences.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
