Job description

Flagship Pioneering is a bioplatform innovation company that invents and builds platform companies that change the world. We bring together the greatest scientific minds with entrepreneurial company builders and assemble the capital to allow them to take courageous leaps. Those big leaps in human health and sustainability exponentially accelerate scientific progress in areas ranging from cancer detection and treatment to nature-positive agriculture.

What sets Flagship apart is our ability to advance biotechnology by uniting life science innovation, company creation, and capital investment under one roof in a way that is largely without precedent. Our scientific founders, entrepreneurial leaders, and professional capital managers are each aligned around an institutionalized process that enables us to innovate and transform for the benefit of people and planet.

Many of the companies Flagship has founded have addressed humanity's most urgent challenges: vaccinating billions of people against COVID-19, curing intractable diseases, improving human health, preempting illness, and feeding the world by improving the resiliency and sustainability of agriculture.

Flagship has been recognized twice on FORTUNE's "Change the World" list, an annual ranking of companies that have made a positive social and environmental impact through activities that are part of their core business strategies, and has been twice named to Fast Company's annual list of the World's Most Innovative Companies.

Position Overview

Flagship Pioneering is seeking a highly skilled and strategic compensation leader to oversee the design, management, and execution of non-executive compensation programs across our ecosystem. This role sits within the Total Rewards team and is responsible for Flagship's internal operations as well as its Series A and B Portfolio Companies globally. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in broad-based compensation and market practices, combined with strong cross-functional leadership and executive presence.

This is a pivotal leadership role with exposure to all facets of Total Rewards, including executive compensation, equity programs, and global compensation design. While the current focus is broad-based compensation, the right candidate will demonstrate the potential to grow into broader leadership within the Total Rewards function over time.

Key Responsibilities
Compensation Program Leadership
  • Design, implement, and continuously refine broad-based compensation programs across a global footprint, including geographic differentials, salary structures, job leveling, and bonus frameworks.
  • Lead annual compensation review cycles (merit, bonus, promotion) in close partnership with HR Business Partners, Finance, and Talent Acquisition.
  • Collaborate with recruiting teams to craft competitive, market-aligned offers while maintaining internal equity.
  • Conduct ongoing market benchmarking and compensation analysis, leveraging tools such as Radford and Pave.
  • Maintain and evolve our pay transparency and pay equity frameworks across the organization.
Strategic Collaboration & Stakeholder Management
  • Partner with executive compensation, equity, and benefits leads to ensure cohesive Total Rewards strategy.
  • Serve as a thought partner to HRBPs and senior business leaders, providing guidance on compensation practices, offer structures, and policy interpretation.
  • Prepare and deliver insights, reports, and recommendations to senior leadership.
Global Compensation & Compliance
  • Maintain deep awareness of compensation regulations across key geographies
  • Develop and maintain localization frameworks to ensure regional competitiveness and compliance.
  • Advise on global mobility compensation matters and cross-border assignments.
Team and Operational Excellence
  • Manage compensation tools, systems, and workflows to ensure accurate, efficient program delivery.
  • Support compensation-related aspects of M&A and new company creation initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field; advanced degree and/or relevant certifications (e.g., CCP) aplus.
  • 10+ years of progressive compensation experience, with specific expertise in broad-based compensation within high-growth or startupenvironments.
  • Experience supporting global workforces and navigating complex, matrixed environments.
  • High executive presence with ability to influence senior stakeholders and deliver recommendations with clarity and confidence.
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Excel, market pricing tools, and HRIS platforms.
  • Background in biotech, tech, or high-growth venture-backed companies preferred.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Exposure to executive and equity compensation programs, even if not the primary area of responsibility.
  • Understanding of Total Rewards integration, including benefits, mobility, and people analytics.

At Flagship, we recognize there is no perfect candidate. If you have some of the experience listed above but not all, please apply anyway. Experience comes in many forms, skills are transferable, and passion goes a long way. We are dedicated to building diverse and inclusive teams and look forward to learning more about your unique background.
