JOB SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Executive Director of Ancillary and Support Services, the Director of Radiology provides strategic and operational leadership for Radiology Services at Effingham Hospital, the Imaging Center in Rincon, and Open MRI. The Director oversees departmental planning, staffing, fiscal management, and the efficient delivery of high-quality imaging services. The Director ensures services are delivered in accordance with organizational policies and procedures and all applicable federal, state, local, and accreditation requirements. This role supervises and develops a team of skilled professionals, promotes best practices and current imaging technology, and maintains consistent regulatory compliance. The Director collaborates with medical staff, internal departments, and external agencies to coordinate patient-centered care, maintain confidentiality, optimize imaging services, improve patient outcomes, and support the organization’s strategic and operational goals. Success in this fast-paced, dynamic environment requires self-motivation, sound judgment, creativity, and the ability to work with a high degree of independence.

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

Department Operations and Service Delivery

• Directs daily Imaging Department operations to ensure safe, high-quality, timely, and efficient diagnostic imaging services.
• Plans, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates, and directs Radiology Services in accordance with applicable regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational requirements.
• Develops, implements, monitors, and periodically updates departmental goals, policies, procedures, protocols, performance standards, and job descriptions.
• Coordinates Radiology Services with other departments to support continuity of care and effective service delivery.
• May perform staff duties when operationally necessary and meets all competencies established for the assigned role.

Quality, Safety, and Regulatory Compliance

• Ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations; accreditation standards; organizational policies; infection-control requirements; OSHA standards; and departmental safety practices.
• Leads quality assurance, performance improvement, patient safety, inspection, audit, and regulatory-readiness activities.
• Maintains effective quality-control practices to promote accuracy, consistency, safety, and continuous improvement.
• Inspects Radiology Services areas and practices at regular intervals and develops corrective action plans when needed.
• Reviews departmental policies and procedures on the organizationally established cycle and recommends revisions as needed.

Leadership and Workforce Management

• Provides leadership, mentoring, continuing education, and professional development opportunities for departmental staff.
• Determines staffing needs, develops schedules, assigns work, monitors productivity, and consults with leadership regarding staffing concerns.
• Interviews candidates and recommends hires for departmental positions.
• Evaluates employee qualifications, competencies, and performance within established timeframes; sets goals and provides timely feedback.
• Coordinates employee orientation, training, and continuing education to maintain role-specific competency and regulatory compliance.

Strategic Planning, Budget, and Technology

• Collaborates with hospital leadership to establish departmental strategy, goals, resource allocation, and long-term plans.
• Prepares and manages the annual operating and capital equipment budgets and keeps expenditures within approved limits.
• Monitors departmental metrics and develops action plans to improve quality, patient satisfaction, productivity, and financial performance.
• Evaluates and implements technologies that improve efficiency, service quality, and patient care.
• Oversees effective use of RIS, PACS, EMR, and other departmental information systems.

Equipment, Supplies, and Facilities

• Oversees the maintenance, repair, replacement, and regulatory compliance of imaging equipment in collaboration with Biomedical Engineering and vendors.
• Ensures the availability and cost-effective use of equipment, supplies, and technology needed for patient care and departmental operations.
• Maintains departmental facilities in accordance with accreditation, regulatory, organizational, and departmental requirements.
• Recommends equipment and supply needs to appropriate leadership.

Collaboration, Communication, and Administration

• Collaborates with physicians, nursing, hospital leaders, multidisciplinary teams, internal departments, and external organizations to coordinate services and advance organizational initiatives.
• Participates in scheduled leadership, safety, quality-improvement, and other assigned committee meetings.
• Prepares and submits required reports, evaluations, studies, forms, and operational updates to appropriate leadership.
• Maintains effective working relationships with the medical staff, healthcare facilities, vendors, and regulatory agencies.
• Stays current with industry developments, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes.

Patient Care and Clinical Support

• Supports patient-centered care by reviewing orders, preparing and educating patients, coordinating services, and contributing to care planning when clinically appropriate and within demonstrated competency.
• Ensures treatment records, patient files, progress notes, charges, and related documentation are complete, accurate, and submitted to the appropriate department in a timely manner.
• Coordinates patient transportation and services within or outside the facility when needed.

Other Duties and Assigned Functions

• Maintains regular and reliable attendance and flexibility to support departmental and organizational needs.
• Adheres to all applicable organizational and departmental policies, procedures, standards, and work practices.
• Performs other duties and assigned functions consistent with the position’s scope, qualifications, and operational needs.

Requirements

Minimum Level of Education: A bachelor’s degree in radiologic science, healthcare administration, or a related field, together with current registration as a radiologic technologist, is required. A master’s degree in radiologic science, health services, or a related field is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.

Formal Training: Requires training in healthcare operations, financial management, diagnostic imaging workflows, radiation safety, infection prevention, quality assurance, applicable healthcare laws, HIPAA requirements, and accreditation standards, including those established by The Joint Commission.

Licensure, Certification, and Registration: Active registration in good standing with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is required. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.

Work Experience: A minimum of five years of hospital-based experience as an ARRT-registered radiologic technologist, including direct patient care in Diagnostic Radiology, Mammography, Nuclear Medicine, Cardiac or General Ultrasound, Computed Tomography, Special Procedures, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging. At least three years of clinical management or supervisory experience is required. Certification in two or more of the listed imaging disciplines is strongly preferred.

Computer Skills: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with working knowledge of Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), Radiology Information Systems (RIS), and Electronic Medical Records (EMRs).
