Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in corporate communications, product communications, PR, or related discipline within pharma/biotech/healthcare.
  • Proven experience supporting marketed products and pipeline programs including commercial activities, clinical data milestones, regulatory communications, or disease education.
  • Strong scientific and product storytelling capabilities, translating complex info for diverse audiences.
  • Working knowledge of drug development and commercialization processes and their communications needs.
  • Experience in rare disease, nephrology, metabolic disorders, or similar science-driven areas preferred.
  • Excellent writing, collaboration, interpersonal, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.
  • Experience managing public relations agencies, vendors, budgets, timelines, and complex projects.
  • Ability to travel 15-20% domestically and internationally; onsite in San Diego; not fully remote.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute integrated communications strategies linking product, pipeline, disease, and corporate priorities.
  • Create communications plans for commercial priorities and major milestones (clinical updates, data presentations, publications, regulatory events, medical congresses, lifecycle initiatives).
  • Lead development of communications materials (press releases, FAQs, product messaging guides, thought leadership content, digital assets).
  • Collaborate with R&D, Medical Affairs, Regulatory, Commercial, Patient Advocacy, Investor Relations, and Corporate Communications for consistent messaging.
  • Support disease education, thought leadership, and market-shaping initiatives.
  • Support media relations and digital/social communications for products and pipeline programs.
  • Prepare executives and experts for external engagements.
  • Manage external PR agencies, vendors, budgets, timelines, and critical paths.
  • Measure effectiveness and use insights to strengthen future strategies.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director, Product & Pipeline Communications based in United States.

This role leads strategic communications for marketed products and pipeline programs within a science-driven rare disease environment.

The position focuses on translating complex clinical, scientific, and regulatory information into clear, credible, and compelling stories.

You will shape communications around commercial priorities, clinical data, regulatory milestones, medical congresses, and product lifecycle initiatives.

The role partners closely with Commercial, Medical Affairs, R&D, Regulatory Affairs, Patient Advocacy, Investor Relations, and Corporate Communications.

You will help strengthen product positioning, increase disease awareness, and support understanding of emerging pipeline opportunities.

The position also provides opportunities to lead external agencies, support media and digital engagement, and prepare executives and experts for external audiences.

This is a collaborative, fast-paced leadership role with a meaningful opportunity to influence how innovative therapies and disease areas are understood.

Accountabilities

The Director will develop and execute integrated communications strategies that connect product, pipeline, disease, and corporate priorities. Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement communications strategies for marketed products and pipeline assets, including programs in rare kidney disease and classical homocystinuria.
  • Create communications plans supporting commercial priorities and major product milestones, including clinical updates, data presentations, publications, regulatory events, medical congresses, and lifecycle initiatives.
  • Lead the development of communications materials such as press releases, FAQs, product messaging guides, thought leadership content, and digital assets.
  • Collaborate with R&D, Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Commercial, Patient Advocacy, Investor Relations, and Corporate Communications to ensure consistent and accurate messaging.
  • Support disease education, thought leadership, market-shaping initiatives, and broader product and pipeline storytelling.
  • Support media relations as well as digital and social communications related to products, pipeline programs, and therapeutic areas.
  • Prepare executives and subject-matter experts for external engagements and communications opportunities.
  • Manage external public relations agencies, vendors, project timelines, budgets, and critical paths.
  • Measure communications effectiveness and use insights to strengthen future strategies and initiatives.
Requirements

The ideal candidate combines strong communications leadership with the ability to understand and translate complex scientific and healthcare information for diverse audiences. Key qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field; equivalent relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • 10+ years of experience in corporate communications, product communications, public relations, or a related discipline within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or healthcare environments.
  • Proven experience supporting marketed products and pipeline programs, including commercial activities, clinical data milestones, regulatory communications, or disease education.
  • Strong scientific and product storytelling capabilities, with the ability to turn complex information into clear, credible, and audience-appropriate communications.
  • Working knowledge of drug development and commercialization processes and the communications requirements associated with clinical, data, regulatory, and commercial milestones.
  • Experience in rare disease, nephrology, metabolic disorders, or another science-driven therapeutic area is preferred.
  • Excellent writing, collaboration, interpersonal, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and changing responsibilities in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.
  • Experience managing public relations agencies, vendors, budgets, timelines, and complex communications projects.
  • Ability to create and manage detailed project plans, critical paths, timelines, and budgets.
  • Ability to travel 15--20% domestically and internationally as needed.
  • Ability to perform face-to-face work with colleagues and/or work onsite in San Diego; the role is not expected to be fully remote.
