What’s The Job?

Working as the Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, you can expect to provide executive leadership and strategic direction for the Town’s parks, recreation, cultural arts, and community services, with responsibility for developing and implementing department-wide strategic and parks master plans. You'll oversee capital improvement projects, asset management, park and facility design, modernization, lifecycle planning, and deferred maintenance while ensuring efficient operations, regulatory compliance, exceptional customer service, and high safety standards. This position manages departmental operating and capital budgets, develops cost-recovery and fee policies, pursues grants and external funding opportunities, and builds partnerships with philanthropic, sponsorship, health, and wellness organizations. You'll lead inclusive community engagement efforts, expand innovative programs based on community needs, ensure ADA accessibility, and support initiatives that promote physical activity, wellness, and quality of life. Additional responsibilities include providing administrative support to the Parks Advisory Board and Arts Council, representing the department with Town leadership, community partners, and regional agencies, maintaining effective public communication, and responding to community inquiries. You'll also recruit, develop, supervise, and evaluate department leadership and staff while fostering a professional, high-performing organizational culture and ensuring compliance with Town policies, personnel procedures, and safety standards. The position requires staying current on industry trends, laws, regulations, and best practices; participating in professional development and conferences; and attending Board of Mayor and Aldermen meetings and other relevant meetings or events as needed.

Here is what you need to be considered for the position of Director of Parks, Recreation & Community Services:

Bachelor’s Degree in Parks & Recreation Administration, Public Administration, Public Health, Business Administration, or a related field, Master’s Degree preferred

Seven (7) years progressively responsible experience in municipal parks and recreation management, including three (3) years in a senior leadership or supervisory role.

CPRP certification required or must obtain with 12 months of hire; CPRE and CAPRA accreditation experience preferred; CPSI desirable.

Valid Driver’s License

First-aid and CPR certification required within six (6) months of employment. Shall be certifiable by the Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association. May work late hours and be expected to work weekends and holidays, as required.
