Job summary

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority seeks a Director of Software Engineering to lead the software engineering function, ensuring quality, security, and reliability for internal teams. The role manages a team practicing adapted Agile development in a DevOps environment, with infrastructure largely in AWS and software written in Elixir.

The Director will set standards, oversee budgets and procurement, and mentor senior leaders while coordinating with product, research, and design functions

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
• 7+ years of experience in an agile software development environment.
• 5+ years of supervisory, managerial, and/or leadership experience.
• Experience with 2+ programming languages from the TIObE top 20.
• Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC).
• Experience with APIs / microservices / SOA.
• Ability to work in a primarily sedentary environment.

Responsibilities

• Set and communicate software engineering standards across the function.
• Lead and mentor Deputy Directors, technical leads, and senior managers.
• Oversee budgeting, pro forma planning, and procurement approvals for the engineering function.
• Foster collaboration with product managers, researchers, writers, and designers.
• Ensure security, compliance, and observability in AWS-based software systems.
• Support professional development and succession planning for staff.
