Job summary

P&E Constructors seeks a Director of Project Controls to provide strategic leadership for project controls across all projects and divisions. You will establish, implement, and improve systems, standards, and processes for planning, scheduling, cost management, risk, and executive reporting.

You will partner with all parts of the organization to deliver timely, accurate project information to enable informed decisions and successful project execution, working unsupervised to support management

Qualifications

  • MBA or MS preferred for advanced leadership in project controls.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering or related field.
  • 15+ years of project controls experience and 5+ years in leadership.
  • Strong analytical, presentation, and forecasting capabilities.
  • Experience with Primavera P6 and COINS ERP is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop Project Controls across all units.
  • Recruit, mentor, and evaluate Project Controls staff.
  • Develop career paths and succession plans for staff.
  • Promote accountability, collaboration, and operational excellence.
  • Ensure standardized Project Controls procedures company-wide.

Company Overview

P&E Constructors is an employee-owned (ESOP) mechanical and electrical construction firm executing large capital projects with deep roots in the industrial construction sector. Since 1946, we’ve delivered fabrication and installation services with a commitment to safety, quality, reliability, and client-focused solutions.

This role supports projects across the United States and requires an executive level of travel based on business and project needs. Candidates may be based anywhere within the U.S.; however, time at the corporate offices in The Woodlands, TX and Wichita, KS is preferred. Travel for this position may reach approximately 75%.

To support project initiation, extended weekly periods may be required. The person who is in this role is expected to travel when the company requires and is expected to be self-directing.

Position Overview

The Director of Project Controls provides strategic leadership and direction for the Project Controls organization across all P&E Constructors projects and operating divisions. The position will have advanced knowledge and industry practice experience and is responsible for establishing, implementing, and continuously improving the company\'s project controls systems, personnel, standards, and processes to ensure consistent planning, scheduling, cost management, progress measurement, risk management, change management, and executive reporting.

The Director of Project Controls partners with all parts of the organization to provide accurate, timely, and actionable project information that enables informed decision-making and successful project execution. This position will work unsupervised to achieve the above goals while supporting management reporting at the executive and board levels.

This position serves as the company\'s subject matter expert for project controls and is accountable for creating a culture of proactive project management through data-driven decision making.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop the Project Controls organization across all business units through the development of People, Processes, and Systems.
  • Recruit, mentor, train, and evaluate Project Controls personnel. Identification of staffing needs. Interview and hiring for project staffing.
  • Develop career paths and succession planning for Project Controls staff.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Establish standardized Project Controls expectations throughout the organization.
  • If needed, this position may have to support project forecasting or scheduling while an employee is on extended leave or vacation.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain company standards for Projects and the Project Controls Department.
  • Ensure every project follows standardized Project Controls procedures regardless of project size or location.
  • Ensure project teams understand cost & schedule performance and establish proactive reporting.
  • Through attendance of weekly and monthly project reviews, identify trends and recommend improvements to Operations leadership.
  • Ensure forecasts accurately represent project performance and provide early warnings of emerging issues.
  • Provide governance and standards for Projects and the Project Controls Department.
  • Administration of current project staff and assignment of project roles.
  • Work with Information Technology to select and implement new systems, data platforms, and increase data quality.
Requirements
  • MBA or MS (Engineering or Construction) preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related Technical Field
  • 15+ years of Project Controls experience
  • 5+ years of Project Controls leadership on projects / staff roles
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong Presentation and public speaking skills
  • Advanced Microsoft Office and excel skills
  • Experience with Primavera P6 scheduling
  • Experience working within ERP systems (COINS preferred)
  • Understanding of project financial lifecycle
  • Knowledge of contract structures
  • Strong forecasting and cost trending capabilities
  • Understanding of billing and cash flow management
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data

  • The market rate for the role is typically at the mid-point of the salary range; however, variations in final salary are determined by additional factors such as the candidate’s qualifications, relevant years of experience, geographic location, internal pay equity, and prevailing market conditions for the specific role.

Work Environment & Physical Demands
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Perform physical movements such as bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, and balancing
  • Safely navigate active construction sites, including uneven, confined, or cluttered work areas
  • Work at elevated heights and comply with fall protection and safety requirements
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
  • Work in environments with exposure to noise, dust, temperature extremes, and other construction-related conditions
  • Interpret technical drawings and visualize three-dimensional concepts when needed
  • Maintain sufficient vision, hearing, coordination, and awareness to safely perform job duties
  • Ability to work extended shifts, including up to 12 hours, in outdoor construction environments and varying weather conditions
  • Maintain physical stamina and strength to perform demanding job duties throughout the workday
