POSITION OVERVIEW

BSC seeks an experienced, collaborative Director of Production to lead the planning and execution of theatrical productions, concerts, education programs, and special events.

This senior leader translates artistic ideas into safe, achievable, and financially responsible plans; oversees production budgets, calendars, staffing, technical planning, facilities, and equipment; and partners closely with executive and artistic leadership, department heads, designers, directors, and visiting artists.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Production Planning and Execution

• Lead production planning and execution across BSC’s annual season, establishing realistic budgets, schedules, staffing plans, and technical requirements.
• Maintain an integrated production calendar covering design deadlines, builds, load-ins, rehearsals, openings, changeovers, strikes, and special events.
• Review designs and technical plans for feasibility, cost, staffing, schedule, venue limitations, accessibility, and safety.
• Identify risks early, recommend practical solutions, and pause work when safety, feasibility, budget, or schedule is materially at risk.

Budget and Resources

• Develop and manage production budgets with organizational leadership, Finance, designers, and department heads.
• Track commitments and forecasts for labor, materials, rentals, transportation, housing, travel, and equipment; identify variances early and reconcile productions promptly.
• Review production purchases, invoices, change orders, rentals, reimbursements, and credit-card expenses.
• Oversee equipment, vehicles, inventories, storage, maintenance, rentals, and capital-replacement planning.

Staff Leadership and Workplace Culture

• Recruit, supervise, support, and evaluate year-round and seasonal production personnel; develop staffing plans aligned with workload and budget.
• Set clear expectations and ensure timely contracts, job descriptions, schedules, onboarding, and reporting structures.
• Foster a collaborative, equitable, inclusive, and respectful culture; monitor workload, overtime, working conditions, housing, and morale.
• Address performance and workplace concerns promptly, solicit staff feedback, and use production postmortems to improve practices.

Collaboration and Communication

• Provide accurate, current information about schedules, readiness, costs, staffing, and risks; lead production meetings and written updates.
• Coordinate closely with Artistic, Finance, Company Management, Facilities, Audience Experience, Marketing, Development, Education, and Community Engagement.
• Clarify interdepartmental handoffs and maintain constructive relationships with directors, designers, stage managers, unions, vendors, producing partners, and other theatres.

Education and Workforce Development

• Partner with BSC’s Education Department to connect professional production activity with youth programs.
• Help develop a technical-theatre component of the Playwright Mentoring Project, introducing students to scenic, lighting, sound, costume, props, and backstage work.
• Mentor young people and support internships, apprenticeships, hands-on learning, workforce development, and career pathways.

Safety and Compliance

• Maintain and enforce safety policies, emergency procedures, required training, inspections, and documentation.
• Ensure compliance with applicable fire, building, workplace-safety, accessibility, employment, union, and professional requirements.
• Oversee safe operation of BSC’s shops, theatrical systems, tools, vehicles, equipment, storage areas, and performance venues.
• Define authority for equipment operation, facility access, expenditures, emergency response, and stopping unsafe work.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• At least seven years of progressively responsible professional theatrical-production experience, including significant supervisory or department-leadership responsibility.
• Experience managing overlapping productions, venues, schedules, substantial budgets, and year-round and seasonal employees.
• Strong knowledge of theatrical production, technical theatre, budgeting, scheduling, safety, and personnel management.
• Ability to evaluate designs and technical proposals for feasibility, cost, staffing, schedule, and safety.
• Excellent organizational, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to address difficult issues constructively.
• Commitment to an equitable, inclusive, respectful, and collaborative workplace; availability for evening and weekend work.
• If not already completed, willingness to complete an appropriate employer-paid OSHA 30-hour course within six months of starting.

Preferred

• Leadership experience with a professional regional theatre, summer theatre, producing organization, or comparable performing-arts institution.
• Familiarity with LORT, AEA, SDC, USA, and IATSE agreements and practices.
• Experience with co-productions, touring or transferred productions, multiple venues, production facilities, inventories, rentals, or capital projects.
• Experience with technical-theatre education or workforce development and relevant production-management, budgeting, drafting, scheduling, or project-management software.
• OSHA 30-hour General Industry or Construction training, or comparable safety training relevant to theatrical production.

PHYSICAL AND SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS

This position works regularly in theatres, shops, rehearsal rooms, storage spaces, and production facilities and requires navigating backstage and technical environments. The schedule includes evenings, weekends, technical rehearsals, openings, and occasional emergency response. Reasonable accommodations will be provided in accordance with applicable law.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
