Duties & Responsibilities

Purpose of Position: Under direction, formulates, plans, directs, coordinates and evaluates the Pharmacy services and programs in a healthcare setting, promoting effective functioning and operations of inpatient, outpatient and satellite pharmacies in coordination with other professional and administrative disciplines.

  1. Develops, recommends and implements pharmaceutical service programs consistent with the medication needs of the patients, including control and accountability of drug products throughout the health care setting.
  2. Participates with health care setting medical staff in formulation, development and recommendation of policies regarding the evaluation, selection, procurement, storage, distribution, use and all other matters relating to drugs in the health care setting, with consideration being given to the following:
    • Formulary
    • Evaluations of clinical data on new drugs or preparations requested for use in health care settings
    • Drugs to be stocked in nursing unit floors, and other services
  3. Collaborates in the development, makes recommendations and implements programs of records management whereby records are correlated with other health care setting records, in accordance with the health care setting's procedures and practices, such as:
    • Transactions of the Pharmacy
    • Record systems and bookkeeping in accordance with accounting department standards
    • Controls over requisitioning and dispensing of drugs and pharmaceutical supplies
  4. Formulates, develops, implements and directs clinical pharmacy activities involving the review and interpretation of all drug orders, maintenance of patient medication profiles and participation in direct patient care, and develops patient care evaluation programs relating to drug utilization and effectiveness.
  5. Develops and prepares department budgets and makes recommendations regarding staffing patterns, Pharmacy health care settings, etc.
  6. Directs pharmaceutical personnel with respect to compounding and dispensing of drugs, in accordance with prescribed policies and standards and legal requirements, requisitioning and procurement of drugs and pharmaceutical supplies, inventory control and maintenance, storage of supplies and their issuance and maintenance of such controls and standards, orderliness and cleanliness of Pharmacy area, and inspection programs.
  7. Selects Pharmacy personnel, guides them in their performance, trains and reviews their performance, makes recommendations regarding the efficiency of department personnel (their performances, potential and development), and follows through in accordance with System's policies and programs in personnel and labor relations on such matters as compensation, classification, training programs, discipline, employee morale, grievance resolution, etc.
  8. Develops information and in-service training programs for nursing and medical staff with respect to drug therapy and side effects.
  9. Develops curriculum relating to use of drugs, adverse drug reporting, post auditing medical records in terms of drug therapy and information on new drugs and controls.
  10. Provides pharmacology conferences for medical and nursing staff on drug therapy, develops and maintains effective liaison with all external agencies, including vendors and professional societies germane to the programs and needs of pharmacy service.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Valid license and current registration to practice as a Pharmacist issued by the NYSED and completion of a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program or Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Public Health or a related discipline; and four (4) years of satisfactory, full-time experience as a Licensed Pharmacist, two (2) years of which must have been in a responsible administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity in a Pharmacy in a hospital, health or medical care setting.
  2. Valid license and current registration to practice as a Pharmacist issued by the NYSED and seven (7) years of satisfactory, full-time experience as a Licensed practicing Pharmacist, three (3) years of which must have been in a responsible administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity in a Pharmacy in a hospital, health or medical care setting.
