Job Overview:
The Director of Nursing for Visiting Nurse Health Systems’ (VNHS) Elderly and Disabled Waiver Program (EDWP) strategizes, leads, develops, and evaluates community-based nursing teams to ensure clinicians deliver high-quality care to vulnerable members. This role is responsible for developing and implementing nursing policies, managing both clinical and non-clinical staff, including the Team Lead for Admissions, Manager of Intake, and Manager of Assessments, maintaining regulatory compliance, and promoting a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement. The Director acts as a liaison between executive leadership, interdisciplinary teams, community partners, external providers, and regulatory agencies. They also work with the Executive Director of Operations (EDO) to streamline operations and achieve productivity goals. Additional responsibilities include overseeing the assessment process, ensuring adherence to clinical standards, maintaining quality, and overseeing the training of new Nursing Associates.
WHO THRIVES IN THIS ROLE
This position suits someone who thinks several steps ahead and wants real ownership of the outcome — building the policies, quality systems, and productivity benchmarks that keep the entire nursing operation running, rather than waiting to be told what to build. With a small, tightly held group of direct reports rather than a large team, this is a role for someone who leads best in an environment of independence and structure, setting the systems and standards others then execute against.
The right person communicates in a direct, factual, no-nonsense way — comfortable putting a hard truth in an email rather than softening it in a meeting and being untroubled by being the one who must deliver it. Decisions in this role, from a corrective action plan to a DCH appeal, get made only once they have been thought all the way through; nothing here rewards a fast, reactive call over a well-reasoned one that will hold up under regulatory scrutiny.
What keeps this person engaged is a real goal to chase and the latitude to solve it their own way — a productivity target to hit, a compliance gap to close, a process to redesign — followed by genuine recognition for the result, not a pat on the back for effort. A structured, fast-moving environment where priorities shift and new problems keep surfacing will hold their interest far longer than a steady, predictable routine.
