Job Purpose: The Director of Nursing (DON) is a registered nurse (RN) responsible for the overall clinical operations of the facility. This includes directing and supervising nursing staff, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing budgets, and fostering a positive and efficient work environment that prioritizes patient care. The DON plays a crucial role in maintaining high standards of care and upholding the facility's commitment to quality and safety.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing policies, procedures, and protocols that align with current best practices, regulatory requirements, and company standards.
  • Manage and supervise nursing staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels to meet patient needs and maintain appropriate nurse-to-patient ratios.
  • Develop and manage the nursing department's budget, monitoring expenses and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Collaborate with other department heads to ensure coordinated and comprehensive patient care.
  • Monitor patient care quality and implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction.
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records and documentation in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and accreditation standards.

  • Oversee medication management practices, ensuring safe and accurate administration of medications.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of infection control policies and procedures.
  • Conduct regular rounds to assess patient care, staff performance, and overall unit operations.
  • Provide direct patient care as needed, particularly in emergency situations.
Qualifications
Required Education
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of operation
Required Experience
  • Minimum of five years of progressive nursing leadership experience, preferably in a behavioral health or substance abuse treatment setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and developing nursing staff.
  • Experience with regulatory compliance and accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission, CARF).
  • Proven ability to develop and implement policies and procedures related to nursing care.
  • Experience with budget management and resource allocation.
