We are seeking an experienced Director of Maintenance Strategy & Planning to lead the development and implementation of maintenance strategies across a large, multi-site mining operation in North America.
This senior leadership role will establish consistent maintenance standards, improve equipment reliability and availability, optimize maintenance planning, and ensure assets deliver maximum value throughout their lifecycle.
You will develop an enterprise-wide maintenance framework, working closely with site operations, engineering, reliability, supply chain, and capital project teams to improve performance, reduce operational risk, and drive continuous improvement across fixed plant and heavy mobile equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance Strategy: Develop and govern a standardized maintenance strategy across multiple mining operations, optimizing equipment availability, reliability, safety, and lifecycle costs.
- Reliability & Asset Management: Apply reliability engineering methodologies, including Reliability-Centred Maintenance (RCM), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA), to reduce equipment failures and improve performance.
- Planning & Scheduling: Establish consistent maintenance planning and scheduling processes, ensuring work is properly scoped, prioritized, resourced, and supported by available materials and contractors.
- Enterprise Standards: Define maintenance procedures, quality standards, responsibilities, decision-making frameworks, and performance metrics across multiple sites.
- Asset Lifecycle Planning: Develop frameworks to assess whether equipment should be maintained, refurbished, upgraded, or replaced based on operational performance, risk, and lifecycle economics.
- Outage & Shutdown Management: Optimize maintenance outage frequency, duration, and timing while considering production requirements, workforce availability, and operational constraints.
- Continuous Improvement: Establish processes to capture lessons from equipment failures, maintenance interventions, and site-level improvements, sharing best practices across the wider organization.
- Work Management: Oversee the end-to-end maintenance work management process, from work identification and prioritization through planning, scheduling, execution, and closeout.
- Technology & Data: Leverage computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), maintenance analytics, condition monitoring, and emerging technologies to improve decision-making and operational efficiency.
- Stakeholder Leadership: Collaborate with site leadership, maintenance teams, engineering, finance, and supply chain to align maintenance strategies with business objectives and capital plans.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Maintenance, Reliability, or a related discipline.
- 15+ years of progressive experience in maintenance, reliability, asset management, or maintenance engineering, including substantial field-based experience.
- Strong technical understanding of fixed plant equipment and/or heavy mobile mining equipment.
- Proven experience developing and implementing maintenance strategies across multiple sites or large-scale operations.
- Extensive knowledge of reliability engineering, failure analysis, preventive and predictive maintenance, and risk-based maintenance methodologies.
- Strong understanding of the complete maintenance planning and scheduling lifecycle, including work prioritization, job planning, labour estimation, materials readiness, and execution feedback.
- Experience standardizing maintenance processes, systems, and performance measures across decentralized operations.
- Demonstrated expertise in asset lifecycle management, equipment availability, outage planning, and maintenance cost optimization.
- Experience using CMMS platforms such as SAP Plant Maintenance (SAP PM), alongside maintenance data and performance analytics.
