Job Description:

The Director of Laboratory Operations is responsible for planning, organizing, and overseeing the Laboratory Department's functions, including chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic testing, and clinical/anatomical pathology related to urological diseases. The role ensures high-quality, costeffective, and timely services, manages departmental budgets, maintains staff competency, and upholds regulatory compliance. The Director also addresses issues requiring referral to the Medical Director or administration and leads performance improvement and continuous quality initiatives.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Work with the Medical Director and the market’s administration on planning, organizing, and directing laboratory operations and ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Daily rounds in Laboratory to judge the effectiveness of operation, utilization of personnel and supplies, and general ethical and professional atmosphere.
  • Secure and maintain the physical facilities, equipment, and supplies required to provide effective patient care and create an optimum physical environment.
  • Initiate and actuate improved methods of services and direct their implementation.
  • Prepare department budgets for personnel, operating expenses, and capital equipment.
  • Responsible for the fiscal operation of the department.
  • Communicate appropriately and clearly to Medical Director, physicians, staff, and the market administration.
  • Consult other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
  • Establish and maintain standards of performance to ensure competency and appropriate licensure of personnel.
  • Direct and participate in the human resource management function for the department by coordinating the selection, promotion, orientation and performance appraisal processes.
  • Coordinate the department’s in-service training.
  • Communicate administrative directives to department personnel
  • Promote effective intradepartmental relationships.

  • Initiate, interpret, and enforce laboratory department procedures and maintain and interpret CUA’s policies and procedures.
  • Cooperate in planning programs, including safety, preparedness for fire and disaster, and hazardous waste disposal for required certifications if necessary.
  • Attend and participate in the market’s meetings and committees, as appropriate.
  • Responsible for the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Support the market’s Research Associates-sponsored clinical trials as necessary.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology, Biology, or Chemistry.
  • Maintain a current certification in an area of laboratory medicine.
  • Previous experience in the supervision or management of a multi-faceted, high-volume clinical laboratory.
  • Experience with regulatory and accreditation of laboratory operations, preferably Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and College of American Pathologists (CAP) is preferred.
Knowledge, Competencies, & Skills:
  • Proven ability to organize and manage laboratory operations.
  • Ability to understand complex assays and problem-solve any issue.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills are required in building programs to support and maintain physician, advanced practice provider, administrative, vendor, and community relationships.
  • Ability to multi-task, self-motivation, reliability, and accountability in meeting timelines.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in staff development, team building, conflict resolution, and group interaction.
  • Excellent computer software and data analysis skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service/relations skills.

Travel:
  • This position is an on-site position and requires intermittent travel.
Physical Requirements for the Job:
  • Regularly required to sit and stand for extended periods.
  • Involves standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, and twisting.
  • Sharp focus to adjust vision when doing close work that changes in distance from eyes.
  • Requires full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Frequently lift and or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds.

Pay Range: $0.00 - $0.00 per hour or $125,000 - $175,000 annually Actual compensation offered to candidates is based on work experience, education, skill level, and geographic location. Compensation may vary depending on the state or region in which the position is located, in accordance with applicable laws.
