Description

The Director of Information Technology is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight of the organization's technology operations across Michigan, Massachusetts, Maryland, and California. This role develops and executes the IT strategy, leads internal and outsourced technology resources, manages vendor relationships, and ensures technology solutions effectively support business operations, compliance, cybersecurity, financial stewardship, resident services, and organizational growth.

The Director partners with executive leadership to align technology initiatives with organizational goals, improve operational efficiency, strengthen data-driven decision-making, and ensure the delivery of secure, reliable technology services throughout the organization.

  • Develop and execute a multi-year technology strategy aligned with the organization's mission, strategic plan, and budget.
  • Advise executive leadership regarding technology trends, risks, opportunities, and investments.
  • Establish IT governance, standards, policies, and procedures.

Technology Operations & Infrastructure
  • Oversee all technology infrastructure, including cloud services, networks, end-user devices, telecommunications, and collaboration platforms.
  • Ensure reliable system performance, security, business continuity, and user support.
  • Manage Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Teams, and related business systems.
  • Develop and maintain technology standards across all offices and properties and ensure consistent service levels.
Cybersecurity, Compliance & Risk Management
  • Lead organizational cybersecurity strategy and risk management efforts.
  • Develop & maintain cybersecurity policies, staff & volunteer training programs, incident response procedures, and disaster recovery plans.
  • Oversee identity and access management, multifactor authentication, endpoint protection, backups, and vulnerability management.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable privacy and regulatory requirements.
Business Applications, Data Analytics & Support
  • Oversee core business systems and collaboration platforms supporting:
    • Property Management
    • Finance and Accounting
    • Development, Facilities, and Construction
    • Human Resources
    • Compliance and Certification
    • Resident Services
  • Evaluate, select, and implement technology solutions that improve operations, reduce manual processes and promote workflow automation across departments.
  • Improve organizational reporting capabilities and ensure leadership has access to accurate, timely, and actionable information.
  • Support data integration and business intelligence initiatives.
  • Provide or oversee responsive end user support, training, and documentation for staff with varying levels of technical comfort.
  • Manage relationships with managed service providers, software vendors, telecommunications providers, and consultants.
  • Negotiate contracts, service agreements, and software licensing arrangements.
  • Monitor vendor performance and service-level compliance.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and operational efficiencies.
Team & Budget Management
  • Build and manage the annual IT budget, balancing mission needs with fiscal responsibility.
  • Implement practical project management practices to deliver IT initiatives on time and within budget.
  • Foster a customer-service-oriented technology culture across the company.
  • Provide technology education and change management support throughout the organization.

Requirements
Supervisory Responsibilities

The Director of Information Technology is responsible for overseeing the department and may be required to train, hire, recruit, and support the IT department staff.

The Director of Information Technology generally works in an office environment.

Physical Demands

This position requires sitting at a desk for extended periods of time and may require a significant amount of time on the phone.

  • Must be able to push/pull/lift up to 30 pounds
Travel Required

Reliable transportation. May need to travel to Co-Ops on occasion.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business, or related field; equivalent experience considered.
  • Proven experience (7+ years) of IT leadership roles with at least 3+ years of managing teams, vendors, and/or major initiatives.
  • Experience developing and implementing enterprise technology strategies.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Microsoft 365 suite of tools
    • Networking, end points, & basic infrastructure (on prem and/or cloud)
    • Cybersecurity best practices
    • Business applications and integrations
    • Data analytics and reporting
    • Vendor and contract management
  • Demonstrated success managing budgets and technology projects.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills, with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate non-technical needs into clear technology requirements and plans.
Preferred Experience
  • Prior experience working in not-for-profit organizations, education, healthcare or social impact organization.
  • Experience in affordable housing, healthcare, property management, or other highly regulated industries.
  • Strong understanding of property management software tools and/or Yardi.
  • Certifications such as CISSP, CISM, PMP, ITIL, Microsoft, or cybersecurity credentials.
  • Experience managing multi-site technology operations.
