Job description

Experience: Ideally, 5+ years of progressive HR or People Operations experience, including building or significantly scaling an HR function.

Core Areas: People Operations, multi-state HR compliance, employee relations, payroll administration, benefits, compensation, performance management, HR policies and processes.

Compensation: $120,000-$140,000 annual base salary, plus a performance bonus.

About the Role

The Director of Human Resources will lead the day-to-day HR and People Operations function, building the policies, systems, and infrastructure needed for a compliant, scalable operation. This hands-on position combines ownership of multi-state compliance, employee relations, payroll, benefits, and performance management with direct execution of HR processes.

The role works directly with the CEO, COO, managers, employees, outside employment counsel, payroll providers, and benefits partners. The scope includes a remote U.S. workforce across multiple states and a large international workforce. Success requires independent judgment, practical HR expertise, and the ability to build systems from scratch while supporting continued hiring and balancing employee experience with business needs.

What You'll Do
  • Build and manage the HR function, establishing scalable policies, processes, and operational infrastructure while handling day-to-day execution.
  • Own multi-state HR compliance for the remote U.S. workforce, covering employee classification, state-specific requirements, workers' compensation, unemployment, leave, and employment documentation.
  • Manage onboarding and offboarding from accepted offer through termination, including I-9s, Rippling setup, payroll enrollment, equipment coordination, employee files, and separation paperwork.
  • Act as the primary HR resource for employees and managers, addressing employee relations, performance issues, performance improvement plans (PIPs), written warnings, complaints, and sensitive workplace situations.
  • Lead termination processes with leadership and involve outside employment counsel when needed.
  • Oversee payroll administration in Rippling, including new hires, terminations, salary changes, bonuses, deductions, corrections, and payroll accuracy.
  • Evaluate and help implement the next stage of the benefits program, including health insurance, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, parental leave, and retirement benefits.
  • Partner with leadership on compensation, raises, promotions, bonus structures, job levels, and compensation benchmarking.
  • Identify HR risks early and work directly with employment counsel when legal guidance or escalation is needed.
Qualifications

Required Experience

  • Prior experience building or significantly scaling an HR function within a growing organization.
  • A hands-on HR background covering multi-state compliance, payroll, employee relations, benefits, performance management, and terminations.
  • Experience working directly with executives and outside employment counsel.

Required Skills

  • Strong multi-state employment compliance knowledge and the judgment to recognize situations requiring legal escalation.
  • Ability to build HR systems and processes from scratch, operate independently, and execute detailed work without relying on a large supporting HR team.
  • Strong organization, attention to detail, ownership, and the ability to make decisions and move work forward quickly.
  • Ability to communicate directly with executives and handle sensitive employee information with discretion.
  • Ability to balance employee experience with business needs in a fast-growing entrepreneurial environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive HR or People Operations experience.
  • Experience as an HR Director, People Operations leader, or senior HR operator.
  • Experience supporting an organization with 30 to 100+ employees.
  • Experience supporting a remote or distributed workforce.
  • Experience developing HR policies, processes, and performance management systems.
  • Experience with Rippling is highly preferred.
  • Unlimited paid time off.
  • MacBook provided.
