Job description

Under the general direction of the Comptroller, the Director of Finance supports the daily financial operations of the Business Office and assists with a variety of accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, and system administration functions. The position contributes to the preparation and analysis of financial reports, reconciliations, audit schedules, and budget information for internal and external stakeholders, including the College, the Department of Higher Education, and state and federal agencies.

The Director of Finance assists with annual audits, financial compliance activities, and continuous improvement of financial processes and procedures. The position also supports the administration and maintenance of the Ellucian Banner Finance system and related reporting tools, including the preparation and analysis of financial and budget data used to support institutional operations and decision-making.

Working collaboratively with departments across the College, the Director of Finance provides guidance and support related to financial processes, reporting, and system functionality while helping ensure compliance with applicable federal and Commonwealth of Massachusetts laws, regulations, and accounting standards.

  • Oversees and coordinates day-to-day operations of Business Office financial functions and provides support to staff and departments as needed.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates Business office staff.
  • Manages all general ledger and related sub-ledger accounting activities including reconciliations, analysis, and ensuring the integrity of financial data within the College’s financial systems.
  • Prepares and reviews financial schedules, reconciliations, reports, analyses, projections, and related documentation as required.
  • Leads the development, coordination, and monitoring of the College's annual operating and capital budgets in collaboration with the Comptroller and senior leadership.
  • Oversees required state and federal reporting, including tax-related filings such as Forms 1099 and sales tax documentation.
  • Ensures compliance with Federal and State regulations with regard to financial reporting and Business Office procedures.
  • Provides individual and group training, and support to departments, faculty, and staff regarding Business Office procedures, financial processes, and Banner Finance functionality.
  • Develops ad hoc financial and budget reports and performs data analysis to support operational and financial decision-making.
  • Maintains Banner Finance system tables and assists with fiscal year setup, year-end closing activities, and related financial system processing.
  • Collaborates with Information Technology staff and system users to troubleshoot information systems and related technical issues and participates in system improvement initiatives.
  • Plays a key role in audit preparation and serves as a resource during state, federal, and independent audit engagements.
  • Oversees multiple duties related to banking and cash management.
  • Prepares fixed asset and investment reconciliations.
  • Develops, recommends, implements, and monitors Business Office financial policies, procedures, and internal processes for continuous improvement.
  • Promotes a high level of customer service and collaborative support for internal and external constituents.
  • Participates in departmental initiatives, committees, cross-functional projects, and other institutional activities in support of the College’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with concentration in Accounting;
  • 5-7 years’ experience in accounting or finance;
  • Minimum of 3-5 years' supervisory experience, preferably in a non-profit or governmental financial operation;
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving stills, strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills;
  • The ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, administrators, and student body;
  • Technical knowledge of financial modeling and projections, software integration with general ledger systems, and Report Writing (i.e., knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel);
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Public Accountant or Master's Degree in business administration, finance, accounting or related field is preferred.
  • Higher education experience in a financial/budget analyst and/or accounting role.
  • User or administration experience on Ellucian Banner.
Full-Time Non-Unit Professional Position:

Salary Range: $95,435.88 - $107,413.61/year (Grade 7), plus a comprehensive State benefits package.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week.
