As a mission-driven nonprofit, the Director of Finance looks beyond financial results alone and helps leadership understand whether resources are being used effectively to advance the mission, programs are financially sustainable, donor and grant requirements are being met, restricted funds are properly managed, and leaders have timely information to make informed decisions. The successful candidate will bring integrity, transparency, accountability, sound financial judgment, kindness, and a strong understanding of nonprofit fiscal management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor cash flow and communicate financial needs, risks, and opportunities to the Executive Director and Board leadership.
  • Ensure transactions are properly recorded, classified, documented, and supported.
  • Maintain respectful and professional relationships with banking partners, financial service providers, and other external partners.
Financial Reporting & Analysis:
  • Prepare and present monthly financial statements, budget-to-actual reports, forecasts, and financial analyses.
  • Provide clear, timely financial information to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and leadership team.
  • Identify financial trends, risks, opportunities, and significant variances requiring management attention.
  • Translate complex financial information into clear, respectful and meaningful information for non-financial leaders.
  • Provide financial insight and recommendations to support strategic and operational decision-making.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
  • Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process in collaboration with the Executive Director, Board Treasurer, and Program Directors.
  • Develop and monitor organizational, program, and grant-specific budgets.
  • Monitor actual results against approved budgets and address significant variances.
  • Partner with Program Directors to evaluate program financial performance and ensure programs run within approved funding parameters.
  • Develop financial projections to support organizational planning, sustainability, and informed decision-making.
Grant & Fund Management:
  • Maintain correct tracking and allocation of restricted and unrestricted funds.
  • Develop and check grant budgets, expenditures, reimbursements, and financial reporting requirements.
  • Ensure grant funds are used following applicable restrictions and agreements.
  • Partner with Program Directors and grant staff to understand financial requirements, allowable expenses, and reporting obligations.
  • Provide accurate financial information and documentation for grant applications, reports, renewals, donors, and funding partners.
Board, Donor & External Reporting:
  • Prepare financial information and reports for the Board of Directors, donors, grantors, and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure financial reports accurately reflect the organization’s financial position.
  • Support the Executive Director in communicating Cy-Hope’s financial position, needs, and opportunities to key stakeholders.
  • Maintain documentation to promote transparency, accountability, and confidence among donors and funding partners.
Audit, Compliance & Regulatory Requirements:
  • Lead and coordinate the annual audit process and serve as the primary internal contact for external auditors.
  • Ensure prompt completion of audit requests and follow-up on audit recommendations.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable nonprofit accounting standards, financial regulations, grant requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Maintain financial records and documentation following legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with preparation and review of financial information for the annual Form 990 and other required filings.
Strategic Financial Leadership:
  • Serve as a financial thought partner to the Executive Director and leadership team.
  • Evaluate the budgetary impact of proposed programs, contracts, purchases, fundraising initiatives, and strategic investments.
  • Offer financial guidance during organizational planning, program development, and major expenditures.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen financial sustainability, improve efficiencies, reduce unnecessary costs, and maximize mission impact.
  • Develop and recommend financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Promote a culture of fiscal responsibility, accountability, and informed decision-making throughout the organization.
Collaboration & Organizational Support:
  • Partner with Program Directors to interpret budgets, financial reports, funding restrictions, and financial considerations.
  • Provide training and guidance with staff on financial procedures, budget management, and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate across departments to ensure financial information is accurate, timely, and understood.
