Job description

Finance Director

Chicago, IL \u2014 Full-Time \u2014 Nonprofit / Community Services

$100,000 - $110,000

Lead Finance. Influence Strategy. Make a Difference.

Are you an accomplished finance professional looking for an opportunity where your expertise genuinely matters? This Finance Director role offers the chance to take ownership of a critical finance function while supporting a respected, long-established nonprofit serving diverse communities throughout Chicagoland.

This mission-driven organization provides a broad range of services supporting families, young people, seniors, immigrants, refugees, entrepreneurs and local communities. As Finance Director, you will have a highly visible position partnering directly with the Executive Director and Board Finance Committee.

Why You'll Want This Role

This is more than a traditional accounting leadership position. The Finance Director will be a trusted financial partner to executive leadership, providing insight that directly influences organizational strategy, financial sustainability and future growth.

You will lead a team of four while having the autonomy to strengthen financial processes, improve reporting, develop budgets and forecasts, and identify opportunities for new revenue streams.

The organization offers an impressive combination of purpose, flexibility, leadership exposure and benefits, including:

  • 90% employer contribution toward medical, dental and vision insurance after 60 days.

  • 403(b) retirement plan with employer match, with full vesting after six years.

  • Generous PTO, sick leave and vacation.

  • Flexible working hours based on individual schedules.

  • Parking/transit benefits and eligible travel reimbursement.

  • A relaxed dress code and energetic, welcoming culture.

  • Access to an exceptional leadership team and Board-level exposure.

  • Genuine opportunities for professional growth while making a meaningful community impact.

Key Functions

  • Lead and improve accounting systems, financial policies and procedures.

  • Prepare financial statements, analysis, budgets and forecasts.

  • Coordinate external audits and oversee audit preparation.

  • Partner with the Executive Director and Board Finance Committee on financial strategy.

  • Lead and develop a finance and accounting team of four.

  • Oversee budgets, grant funding, contracts and financial reporting.

  • Monitor cash flow, income and expenses and provide actionable financial insight.

  • Oversee A/R, A/P, payroll, securities and other major accounting operations.

  • Support purchasing, inventory and related financial activities.

  • Help develop new revenue opportunities and long-range financial plans.

What We're Looking For

The ideal Finance Director will have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance and approximately 5+ years of relevant experience, ideally within a nonprofit environment. Experience with Illinois and City of Chicago grants, budgeting and funding contracts is highly desirable.

CPA or MBA credentials are a plus but not required. Strong Excel/Google Sheets and QuickBooks experience are preferred.

Above all, the successful Finance Director will be a mature, hands-on leader with excellent judgment, communication skills, discretion and the ability to partner effectively with senior leadership.

If you're ready to combine financial leadership, career growth, flexibility and meaningful community impact, this Finance Director opportunity could be an excellent next step.
