The Director of Finance provides strategic and operational leadership for the organization’s financial activities. This role oversees accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, cash flow, internal controls, audits, tax and regulatory compliance, and financial systems. The Director partners with executive leadership and the Board to provide timely financial insight, strengthen financial processes, manage risk, and support informed decision-making. The position also leads grant financial management and compliance for applicable federal and other restricted awards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead daily Finance and Accounting operations, including general ledger, A/P, A/R, bank reconciliations, cash management, and financial reporting.
- Oversee accurate, timely financial statements and management reports in accordance with accounting standards, policies, and internal controls.
- Lead budgeting and forecasting; monitor performance, analyze variances, identify trends and risks, and provide recommendations.
- Monitor cash flow, revenue, expenses, and financial performance; identify opportunities to improve efficiency and strengthen controls.
- Develop and improve financial policies, procedures, systems, and internal controls to support accuracy, compliance, and efficiency.
- Oversee audits, tax filings, regulatory reporting, and other financial compliance activities.
- Lead and develop Finance and Accounting staff; set priorities, clarify expectations, and monitor performance.
- Partner with executive leadership on financial planning, business decisions, and special projects, providing clear financial insights.
- Present financial results, forecasts, risks, and updates at Board and Executive Committee meetings.
- Maintain relationships with banking partners, advisors, funders, vendors, and other key stakeholders.
- Establish departmental goals and priorities aligned with organizational strategy.
GRANT FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND COMPLIANCE:
Provide financial oversight for federal and other restricted grants, ensuring grant funds are managed accurately, transparently, and in accordance with award requirements, applicable federal regulations, and organizational policies. Responsibilities include:
- Maintain grant accounting records, internal controls, approvals, timekeeping, and documentation for grant funds, match, program income, and project costs.
- Monitor grant budgets, commitments, balances, and variances; prepare forecasts and obtain required approvals for material budget changes.
- Track, reconcile, and certify required cash and in-kind matching contributions, ensuring they are allowable and properly supported.
- Prepare and reconcile federal payment requests and drawdowns, including SF-270 submissions and Payment Management System activity.
- Prepare required grant financial reports, including SF-425s, budget workbooks, match certifications, and supporting schedules.
- Record, reconcile, safeguard, and report program income in accordance with award requirements.
- Oversee financial compliance for grant-funded procurements and contracts, including vendor selection, cost reasonableness, invoices, and spending limits.
- Maintain audit-ready grant records and support reviews, audits, corrective actions, questioned costs, refunds, and compliance concerns.
- Serve as the financial liaison for grant matters, advising staff and leadership, providing updates, and training staff on financial procedures.
- Lead grant closeout, including final reconciliations, reports, reimbursement requests, remaining funds, and record retention.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
- Use financial data to identify issues and recommend practical solutions.
- Maintain confidentiality and sound judgment when handling sensitive information.
- Participate in organizational meetings, events, and cross-functional initiatives as needed.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by senior leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and internal controls.
- Ability to analyze financial data, identify trends and risks, and clearly communicate findings.

Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible accounting or finance experience.
- Minimum of two years of supervisory or people‑management experience.
- Demonstrated experience with financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and accounting operations.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Nonprofit accounting and financial leadership experience.
- Experience managing federal or restricted grants, including budgeting, match, reporting, procurement, and audit readiness.
- Working knowledge of 2 CFR Part 200 and applicable SBA financial reporting requirements.
- Experience with Sage Intacct or a comparable accounting platform.
- Advanced knowledge of forecasting, budgeting, financial modeling, and GAAP.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Sit approximately 80% of the workday; stand or walk approximately 20%.
- Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 20 pounds.
- Frequent use of a computer, phone, and standard office equipment.
- Occasional local travel and attendance at meetings or organizational events may be required.
