Job summary

Karman Space & Defense is seeking a Director of Engineering to guide engineering strategy for large-platform machining and forming operations and to oversee cross-site collaboration to ensure delivery, quality, and productivity across California locations.

You will lead process development, tooling oversight, and program performance, aligning technical capabilities with new opportunities while mentoring teams and driving improvements across manufacturing interfaces.

Qualifications

• BS in mechanical, aerospace, or manufacturing engineering (or related field).
• 10+ years in aerospace or defense manufacturing.
• 5+ years in engineering leadership or management.
• Experience leading complex technical programs and cross-functional teams.
• ERP experience and strong communication skills.

As Director of Engineering, you will guide engineering strategy, capability development, and technical execution for large‑platform machining and forming operations. You will advance manufacturing technologies, lead cross‑site collaboration, strengthen engineering processes, and support program performance to ensure delivery, quality, and productivity across California locations.

Responsibilities

• Leads advancement of large‑part machining, spin forming, and bump forming technologies to strengthen technical capability and manufacturing performance.
• Develops and implements process controls and new manufacturing methods that meet customer and business requirements.
• Oversees tooling design, machine programming, and process optimization initiatives.
• Drives improvement of engineering data systems to enhance technical insight, integration, and productivity.
• Supervises cross‑functional engineering and program teams, ensuring effective assignment of skills and balanced workloads.
• Mentors personnel, supports development planning, and manages performance expectations.
• Coordinates staffing and execution of project plans covering cost, schedule, and technical goals.
• Owns program‑level results and standards across engineering and manufacturing interfaces.
• Supports business development by aligning technical capabilities with new customer opportunities and proposal development.
• Leads cross‑site collaboration and standardization in processes, tooling, and documentation.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in mechanical, aerospace, or manufacturing engineering (or related field).
• 10+ years of experience in aerospace or defense manufacturing.
• 5+ years of experience in an engineering leadership or management role.
• Demonstrated success leading complex technical programs and cross‑functional teams.
• Expertise in machining, spin forming, or related forming technologies.
• Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and advanced business systems.
• Strong communication and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master of Science (M.S.) in engineering or management.
• Experience with CATIA, Vericut, Mastercam, or SolidWorks.

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Ability to lift up to 15 pounds. The essential functions of this position must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

Special Mentions

• Home site may be Corona or South El Monte with travel 1–2 days per week to the other location.
