Job summary

Sweeny Community Hospital is seeking a Director of the Emergency Department to provide leadership and accountability for the ED. The role includes 24/7 management oversight, staff development, and advancing evidence-based leadership practices to promote a patient/family centered environment.

Key responsibilities include establishing policies with the medical director, managing the department budget, and participating in multiple committees to enhance care delivery and quality assurance in the ED.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Summary/Objective: The Director of Emergency Department’s (ED) primary purpose is to provide direct and indirect provisions of professional nursing care to the patients and accountability for all Team Members functions in the Emergency Department. The Director of Emergency Department will also provide leadership, 24/7 management accountability and assist in promoting evidence-based leadership practices at SCH. In addition, they will lead initiatives to foster a patient/family centered environment and transform care delivery.

Essential Functions:

• Support and adhere to hospital policies, procedures, philosophy, philosophy, and mission.
• Promotes an environment that supports best nursing practices and fosters transformation of bedside nursing.
• Provides leadership for the unit.
• Contributes to team efforts and uses appropriate conflict management skills proactively to resolve intradepartmental and interdepartmental grievances/concerns.
• Selects, hires, and trains ED Team Members; leading orientations of new Team Members.
• Develop policies and procedures based on current literature, input from clinicians and other sources information from patient care evaluations.
• Coordinate with the medical director, hospital administration and clinicians to assess the need for policies, procedures and protocols.
• Supervise and ensure the accurate collecting, coding, scoring and developing of processes for validation of data entered into the registry.
• Evaluates Team Member performance and makes recommendations for merit increases, promotions, and disciplinary action as applicable.
• Provides fiscal management by developing and recommending department operating budget as instructed and insures compliance. Evaluates and justifies equipment and supply needs.
• Directs the day-to-day function of the Emergency Department in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern these areas.
• Participates in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the hospital’s quality assurance program in the Emergency Department.
• Participates in multiple organizational-wide and community-based committees as necessary and requested.
• Rounds to ensure that ED Team Members perform their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.
• Reviews complaints and grievances made or filed by Emergency Department Team Members.
• Facilitates EMS and Nursing education, additionally builds relationships with EMS crews.
• Exhibits flexibility to assist the Emergency Department in times of increased patient load, disaster and/or short staff.
• Works beyond normal working hours, and in other staff positions temporarily, when necessary.
• Subject to callback during emergency conditions (mass traumas, evacuation, disaster, etc.)
• Attends and participates in continuing education programs.
• Knowledgeable of nursing practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to hospital setting.
• Exhibits leadership and supervisory abilities and the willingness to work collaboratively with other Team Members.

Supervisory Responsibility:

• Supervises Emergency Department Nursing Team Members

QualificationsWork Environment:

• Subject to frequent interruptions.
• Involved with patients, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc. under all circumstances and conditions.
• Exposed to hostile and emotionally unstable patients, families, Team Members, and visitors.
• Communicates with medical staff, department staff, and other departments.
• Exposed to equipment, odors, etc., throughout the workday, as well as reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other contaminants.

• Demonstrates the ability to work with patients in the group specific to the environment of care as necessary.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described as follows are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This position requires continuous physical activity, endurance, ability regularly standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, pushing, pulling and crouching as well as lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, salaried position, and core hours of work are Monday through Friday 8 hours per day with overtime as needed. Position requires work schedule flexibility based on needs of the facility.

TRAVEL

Occasional travel is expected for this position due to continuing education.

Required Education, Experience and License

• Associates in Nursing
• Current, unencumbered, active license to practice as an RN in Texas.
• Currently certified in TNCC, ACLS, BLS and ATCN
• 3 years clinical experience in emergency care.
