Job summary

The Opportunity Hub seeks a Director of Development to lead fundraising, donor engagement, and external relations during a period of growth. This in-person role is based in Brooklyn, NY, and reports to the Executive Director.

The successful candidate will design and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan, oversee institutional and individual giving, corporate partnerships, and donor communications, while building a strong culture of philanthropy and leading a high-performing team.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of fundraising experience in nonprofit, social service, or community-based org.
  • Proven success securing support from individual donors, foundations, corporations, and public funding sources.
  • Experience developing and executing fundraising strategies that drive revenue growth.
  • Strong event management, budget oversight, vendor management, and revenue generation.
  • Exceptional written and verbal donor communications skills.
  • Experience mentoring staff and developing high-performing teams.

Supervises: Development Manager, Grants Manager, Consultants

Status: Full-Time Exempt

Hours and Schedule: 35 hours/week; Monday-Friday, some flexibility with daily schedule and some weekend or evening events required.

Location: This position is in-person, working from Spring Creek Towers in East New York, Brooklyn.

Position Summary

The Opportunity Hub seeks a strategic, entrepreneurial, and relationship‑driven Director of Development to lead fundraising, donor engagement, and external relations during an exciting period of organizational growth. Reporting to the Executive Director and serving as a member of the senior leadership team, the Director of Development will design and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy that strengthens long‑term sustainability and diversifies revenue. The Director will oversee institutional giving, individual giving, corporate partnerships, government funding, donor communications, fundraising events, and development operations in support of the organization’s projected annual budget of approximately $4 million.

This role requires both strategic vision and hands‑on execution. The successful candidate will be an accomplished fundraiser, skilled communicator, and collaborative leader who can build systems, cultivate meaningful relationships, activate board engagement, and translate community impact into compelling opportunities for investment and partnership. The ideal candidate has a natural ability to inspire, mentor, and develop others while building a strong culture of philanthropy across the organization. We are seeking a strategic thinker and people‑centered leader who approaches ambitious goals with resilience, empathy, integrity, and a sense of humor.

Key Responsibilities
Fundraising and Revenue Strategy
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy aligned with organizational priorities and growth goals.
  • Establish annual fundraising goals, monitor performance metrics, and drive results across all revenue streams.
  • Develop and oversee an annual development calendar that integrates fundraising campaigns, donor cultivation and stewardship activities, communications, grant deadlines, events, and key engagement opportunities.
  • Identify, cultivate, and steward relationships with major donors, foundations, and corporate partners, and directly manage a portfolio of key donors.
  • Partner with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to support donor cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, strategic relationship building and increased board engagement in fundraising activities.
  • Lead the planning and execution of signature fundraising events, donor gatherings, volunteer engagement opportunities, site visits, and other experiences that deepen supporters' connection to The Opportunity Hub's mission and impact.
Donor Engagement and External Relations
  • Strengthen and communicate The Opportunity Hub's case for support through compelling fundraising and donor communications.
  • Oversee development of appeals, sponsorship materials, annual reports, presentations, donor updates, and other fundraising collateral.
  • Ensure communications accurately reflect the strengths, experiences, and priorities of the communities served.
  • Represent The Opportunity Hub at meetings, conferences, community events, and networking opportunities to increase visibility and expand partnerships.
Team Leadership and Organizational Development
  • Build, supervise, and develop a high‑performing development function, including staff, consultants, and external vendors as needed.
  • Establish clear goals, accountability measures, and professional development opportunities for team members.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and mission‑driven culture that supports innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Evaluate departmental capacity and recommend staffing, technology, and resource investments to support fundraising growth.
Development Operations and Financial Management
  • Oversee development systems, processes, and technology, including Neon CRM, donor data management, prospect tracking, and reporting.
  • Develop and maintain policies, procedures, workflows, and internal controls that support effective fundraising operations.
  • Ensure compliance with fundraising regulations, ethical standards, grant requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Partner with the Executive Director and finance team to develop fundraising budgets, revenue forecasts, and expense allocations.
  • Collaborate across departments to align fundraising priorities with organizational needs and community impact goals.
Organizational Leadership
  • Serve as a strategic member of the senior leadership team, contributing to organizational planning and decision‑making.
  • Support board engagement by participating in board meetings and facilitating fundraising‑related presentations, discussions, and training.
  • Stay informed on nonprofit sector trends, philanthropic opportunities, and fundraising best practices, bringing recommendations to strengthen organizational strategy.
  • Help cultivate a culture of philanthropy across the organization and among key stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • 8+ years of progressively responsible fundraising experience within a nonprofit, social service, or community‑based organization.
  • Demonstrated success securing support from individual donors, foundations, corporations, and public funding sources.
  • Proven experience developing and executing fundraising strategies that drive sustainable revenue growth.
  • Strong event management experience, including budget oversight, logistics, vendor management, and revenue generation.
  • Experience managing and mentoring staff with a commitment to developing high‑performing teams.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including proposal writing and donor‑facing communications.
  • Strong relationship‑building and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage donors, board members, community stakeholders, and partners.
  • Strategic thinker with excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and donor database systems; experience with Neon CRM strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with Brooklyn communities, particularly East New York and Canarsie, preferred.
  • Enthusiasm for helping shape fundraising strategy and infrastructure within a growing organization.
Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $115,000-$135,000, commensurate with experience.
