The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is the country’s first and foremost civil and human rights law organization. Founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, who subsequently became the first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice, LDF was launched at a time when the nation’s aspirations for equality and due process of law were stifled by widespread state-sponsored racial inequality. From that era to the present, LDF’s mission has been transformative–to achieve racial justice, equality, and an inclusive society.
LDF’s litigation, policy advocacy, organizing, and public education programs in the substantive areas of criminal justice, economic justice, education and political participation seek to ensure the fundamental and basic human rights of all people to quality education, economic opportunity, the right to vote and fully participate in democracy, and the right to a fair and just judicial system.
The LDF Development Department is headquartered in NYC and oversees all fundraising efforts to support LDF’s ongoing programs and operations. This is a transformative time for LDF and for its Development Department, having seen a recent dramatic influx of support in direct response to widespread attention to racial injustices. This is a pivotal time for LDF as the organization looks to build on this growth.
LDF seeks a collaborative, motivated and experienced individual to serve as Director of Development Services to help set strategy for the Development Department. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer (CDO) the Director will play a critical leadership role in developing, implementing and managing high quality day-to-day Development operations systems. The Director will create and manage an effective infrastructure to maximize fundraising and constituent relations efforts by optimizing business processes and systems and providing timely analysis to support data-driven decision-making in anticipation and support of donor needs.
The Director of Development Services will be responsible for operationalizing the CDO’s strategy and charged with ensuring that the entire Development team is functioning at the highest level of effectiveness by developing systems that align with LDF’s vision of excellence.
The successful candidate will be passionate about the mission of The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and value how fundraising contributes to that mission. He/she will be a seasoned professional capable of proactively developing systems to maximize fundraising potential and articulating strategies while working in a fast-paced environment, maintaining flexibility and a sense of urgency. The ideal candidate will be organized and entrepreneurial, able to work with senior management as well as manage a collaborative team, enabling staff to perform at the highest level to achieve the best possible outcomes. The candidate must have the organizational and systems skills to create protocols and metrics that measure and advance a development team’s goals.
