The Director of Development will direct the overall strategy and fundraising operation on behalf of Johns Hopkins University and a smaller development office (DOFF). The Director will play a significant role in department or DOFF operations, serving as a member of its senior administrative team and providing input into strategy and management of philanthropic priorities and stewardship, including major gift cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, annual giving, and constituent engagement.
Responsibilities
- Lead a complex team of professional and support staff, directing personnel actions including hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules.
- Implement fundraising strategies and priorities for a complex division or department(s); evaluate and update strategies to meet short‑ and long‑range goals.
- Create and implement pipeline building strategies through data analytics and outreach.
- Oversee, mentor, and motivate team members; assign tasks, monitor performance, resolve conflicts, and ensure compliance with JHU policies.
- Align team activities toward building, strengthening, and sustaining relationships with key stakeholders.
- Cultivate and maintain an active portfolio of major and principal gift level donors and prospects; engage directly in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals, foundations, and corporations.
- Develop and execute personalized cultivation strategies to engage prospects.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with faculty and administrative leaders; fundraise to support their vision for the unit.
- Develop comprehensive understanding of departmental mission, research, and programs to communicate funding opportunities.
- Lead recruitment and management of the department’s volunteers and advisory board.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and ethical standards; advocate for donor intent in fund distribution.
- May manage personnel and operating budgets directly or under senior leadership.
- Collaborate with DAR leadership on high‑priority, high‑visibility tasks.
- Lead and manage the Development team of major gift officers, annual giving officer, and development coordinator across North, Central, South America, and Asia.
- Complete 50 visits per year; solicit 10–20 gifts per year; close 15–20 gifts per year for a total of $2.5–5 million.
- Lead SAIS Donor relations program, stewardship, and acknowledgment process.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Seven years of professional‑level related experience, including one year of supervisory/management experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience; vice versa, per JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (Master’s or JD).
- Higher education and/or academic medical center fundraising experience.
- Proven solicitation success at the major gift ($100k+) level; strong preference for seven‑figure level.
- Supervisory experience of frontline fundraisers.
- Experience setting vision and multi‑lateral goals for a team.
- Experience leading large‑scale or cross‑functional initiatives or projects.
- Leadership characteristics: build effective networks and relationships, provide feedback, foster consensus and collaboration, lead by example in adaptability and empathy, act with authenticity and transparency, navigate organization with purpose.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
- Familiarity working in a CRM system.
Compensation
Starting Salary Range: $99,799 – $174,999 (targeted salary: $165,000). Salary does not include all components of the School of Advanced International Studies compensation program; discretionary bonus possible.
