Job summary

Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies is seeking a Director of Data to own our data strategy and platform as we scale toward software-defined vehicles. This hands-on leadership role sets technical direction while growing a high-performing team responsible for high-volume vehicle and enterprise data.

Role supports Palo Alto, Irvine, or Vancouver locations; we’ll accommodate the best fit. You will recruit and mentor data engineers, partner with product and quality teams, and drive governance

Qualifications

• 8–10 years in data engineering or analytics.
• 3+ years managing high-volume data teams.
• Hands-on with large-scale data systems (SQL, Python).
• Experience with Databricks; Spark or similar.
• Designed and scaled data architecture (ETL/ELT, streaming).
• Experience hiring and developing data engineers and analytics staff.
• Cross-functional collaboration with engineering, product, quality, and manufacturing.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive data strategy and roadmap across telemetry, manufacturing, and enterprise data.
• Own architecture decisions for large-scale data platforms handling streaming and batch data.
• Remain hands-on: review designs and code, set technical standards.
• Recruit, manage, mentor, and grow a data engineering/analytics team.
• Partner with stakeholders to ensure data infrastructure supports reliability and analytics needs.
• Establish data governance, quality, and security standards across pipelines.
