ABOUT BOARDSOURCE

For almost four decades, BoardSource has helped shape nonprofit governance. Today, we are advancing a broader vision: a nonprofit sector where boards lead with purpose, steward power responsibly, and remain accountable to the communities they serve. Through research, thought leadership, membership, and practical governance solutions, BoardSource works alongside nonprofit leaders to transform governance practices, strengthen organizations, and help our sector fulfill its role within civil society, in line with our Theory of Practice.

Purpose-Driven Board Leadership (PDBL) is BoardSource’s primary framework for good governance. Boards that combine a purpose-driven lens with strong governance infrastructure and practices are better positioned to sustain the organization over time, improve outcomes for those most impacted by the organization’s work, and help the sector as a whole fulfil its role in civil society. BoardSource advances the principles of PDBL across its core programs and field-facing work, including membership, assessments, learning journeys, thought leadership, consultant engagement, and strategic partnerships.

ROLE OVERVIEW: DIRECTOR OF CONTENT & GOVERNANCE EDUCATION

BoardSource now seeks nominations and applications for its Director of Content & Governance Education. This role will hold significant responsibility for operationalizing the co-creation and expertise elements of BoardSource’s Theory of Practice under the leadership and direction of the Chief Program & Strategy Officer and in close partnership with the Director of Learning & Research. This role will create new governance content, develop curricula for trainings and learning journeys, present BoardSource content in live and virtual formats, and refine and amplify existing resources to help drive BoardSource’s work to evolve governance. The Director will bring deep nonprofit governance expertise, strong writing and facilitation skills, and a demonstrated commitment to community-centered approaches that listen to, learn from, and co-create with nonprofit leaders.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Content & Governance Education will help BoardSource strengthen its role as the leading source for nonprofit governance guidance while advancing a more purpose-driven, community-centered approach to board leadership. This person will help shape and develop the ideas, resources, and practical tools that help boards understand their responsibilities, lead with purpose, share and steward power responsibly, and remain accountable to the communities most impacted by their organizations’ work.

Thought Leadership
  • Serve as a governance subject‑matter expert within BoardSource, helping to articulate what strong, purpose‑driven nonprofit governance requires in any given moment and how boards can lead in ways that advance organizational purpose and community accountability.
  • Develop and refine governance frameworks, guidance, articles, tools, and field‑facing resources grounded in BoardSource’s Purpose‑Driven Board Leadership framework and Theory of Practice.
  • Develop content that responds to emerging trends, questions, challenges, and opportunities affecting nonprofit boards and translate them into timely, practical, and accessible guidance for the field.
  • Under the direction of the CPSO, represent BoardSource through writing, speaking, facilitation, conferences, strategic partnerships, and other opportunities to advance learning across the nonprofit sector.
Content Strategy & Resource Development
  • In partnership with the CPSO, develop and implement an integrated content strategy that supports BoardSource’s purpose, membership programs, tools and trainings, consultant engagement, and strategic partnerships.
  • Design, develop, and steward practical resources that help nonprofit boards and executives apply purpose‑driven governance principles in real organizational contexts, including guides, tools and toolkits, curricula, and trainings.
  • Bring a community‑centered approach to content development by engaging nonprofit leaders, members, consultants, partners, and community stakeholders, incorporating what is learned, and inviting them to co‑create BoardSource’s tools, guidance, and learning experiences.
  • Develop and support innovative approaches to delivering governance guidance in multimodal formats, including written resources, videos, virtual and in‑person experiences, asynchronous tools, facilitated offerings, and other emerging formats.
  • Provide expert support to BoardSource members and the broader governance community, including responding to member governance questions through BoardSource’s Ask the Expert service and other programs.
  • Manage the Governance Consultant Membership program, including developing programming for consultant convenings.
  • In partnership with the CPSO, cultivate relationships with nonprofit leaders, community stakeholders, philanthropic institutions, membership networks, consultants, and other partners to co‑create and amplify governance knowledge.
  • Manage budgets, timelines, contributors, and workplans related to content, educational programming, and thought leadership initiatives.
Cross Functional Collaboration
  • Serve as a trusted internal partner to teams across BoardSource by providing governance expertise, content development guidance, and strategic input on member engagement, learning design, program development, and sector‑facing initiatives.
  • Collaborate with other BoardSource teams to ensure all content and related activities align with organizational goals and priorities.
  • Collaborate with the Learning & Research team to ensure content priorities, curricula, and educational resources are informed by research findings, evaluation insights, and organizational learning.

This position does not currently have direct reports but may assume supervisory responsibilities as the role and organizational needs evolve.
