Job description

Our client is an established Brooklyn landscape design-build firm working on urban outdoor environments for clients across the New York region and beyond. The work includes rooftop terraces, brownstone backyards, boutique hotels and custom outdoor environments built around specialty fabrication — architectural metalwork, custom woodwork, pergolas, planters, site furnishings, water features and other one‑of‑a‑kind elements. Designers, builders and horticulture teams work side by side to take ideas from start to finish.

The role

As Director of Construction you are responsible for delivering exceptional project execution while partnering closely with ownership to grow and strengthen the business. This is a hands‑on role. You will step into work currently led by the COO, who will train you on the job and hand over responsibility as quickly as you are ready to take it.

What you will do
  • Lead all phases of construction, working with the design and horticulture teams so the work is completed safely, efficiently, on budget and to the firm's standard of craftsmanship.
  • Anticipate project needs and plan upcoming phases in advance — labour, materials, equipment and scheduling.
  • Manage communication throughout construction: schedule updates, site conditions, project changes, pay request billing and problem resolution.
  • Read and interpret plans, shop drawings and construction documents, perform field measurements, and oversee site layout and grading.
  • Oversee project tracking, documentation, field reports, timekeeping and coordination with the payroll and administrative teams.
  • Oversee tools, equipment, vehicles, shop operations and facilities so resources are organized, maintained and ready.
  • Partner with ownership to identify additional project scope, operational improvements and new business.
  • Train and mentor the team in project planning, communication, craftsmanship, safety and proactive problem‑solving.
What we are looking for
  • Experience in metal fabrication, masonry and woodwork is a prerequisite.
  • Experience with technical drawing and construction documentation is a prerequisite.
  • Leadership experience in high‑level design‑build work, and comparable experience working with designers to execute schematic designs.
  • This is a genuinely hands‑on role. When the shop is stretched you may be finishing welds on a pergola, or picking up a drill to help fabricate trellis panels and planters. Lead from the front.
  • Strong organizational skills across simultaneous projects, timelines, budgets and priorities, and a strong design aesthetic.
  • A collaborative style of leadership that develops the people on your crew.
  • A forward‑thinking, entrepreneurial mindset with an interest in supporting growth and improving operations.
  • Certification and experience operating heavy equipment is a plus.
Compensation and benefits

$120,000 – $140,000, exempt and full-time, depending on experience.

  • Medical through Aetna, with a healthcare Flexible Spending Account and a Health Savings Account. Dental, vision, voluntary short‑and long‑term disability, and Life and AD&D through MetLife.
  • The firm pays 75% of the premium on the medical, dental and vision plans offered.
  • Phone and vehicle allowance, with fuel, toll and ticket reimbursement.
  • 15 days (120 hours) of paid time off, prorated from your start date.
  • A fully paid office closure from Christmas through New Year's.
  • Eligibility for a yearly bonus as well as performance‑based bonuses.

Roughly 50% office and 50% onsite. The workday is 7:30am to 4:30pm. Applicants should include a link to their portfolio on their resume.
