Job summary

The Town of Clarksville is seeking a Building Commissioner to balance technical expertise with strong customer service, overseeing permitting, inspections, code enforcement, and facilities management.

The ideal candidate has extensive knowledge of building codes, plan review, and staff leadership, capable of presenting before boards and mentoring a municipal team to deliver safe, compliant development.

Qualifications

• Two+ years of higher education in construction or related field.
• Minimum seven years of progressively responsible experience in commercial and residential construction, inspections, and code administration.
• Seven years interpreting and applying International Building Codes and related construction codes.
• Thorough knowledge of construction methods, permitting, inspections, and applicable state and local building regulations.
• Experience reviewing construction plans and specifications and preparing detailed technical comments for architects, engineers, designers, and contractors.
• Experience managing building inspections, permitting software, code enforcement activities, and departmental operations.
• Working knowledge of GIS, Microsoft Office, and electronic permitting or code enforcement software systems.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid Indiana driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Protect health, safety, and welfare through professional plan review, permitting, inspections, property maintenance enforcement, and facilities management.
• Review complex construction plans and provide detailed comments for architects, engineers, designers, and contractors.
• Present before public boards and commissions and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
• Mentor staff members and oversee departmental operations.
