Job description

The Director, Material Planning is responsible for overseeing the forecasting, planning, inventory management, and distribution of materials required for production. This role involves strategic planning, coordinating with various departments, managing supplier relationships, and ensuring the efficient flow of materials to meet production schedules and business objectives.

Responsibilities

1. Demand Forecasting

  • Analyze sales forecasts and historical data to predict future material needs accurately; adjust material planning as needed.

2. Strategic Planning and Coordination

  • Develop and implement material planning strategies; coordinate with production, logistics, procurement, and other departments to ensure a seamless flow of materials.

3. Inventory Management

  • Monitor and manage inventory levels; implement and oversee inventory control policies and procedures, and conduct audits.

4. Procurement Oversight

  • Select and evaluate suppliers, negotiate contracts, and ensure timely delivery of materials; maintain supplier relationships and evaluate performance.

5. Cost Management

  • Monitor and control material costs; identify and implement cost‑saving opportunities.

6. Process Improvement

  • Implement best practices and continuous improvement initiatives, utilizing technology and software solutions.
  • Identify and mitigate risks and develop contingency plans.
  • Lead and manage the material planning team; hold team responsible for metrics / KPI performance.

9. Reporting and Analysis

  • Prepare and present regular reports on inventory status, material availability, and procurement performance; conduct analyses and identify trends.

10. Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations, company policies, and sustainability initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field. A master’s degree or relevant certification (e.g., APICS CPIM) is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in material planning, supply chain management, or a related field, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of material planning, inventory management, and procurement processes.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing strategic material planning initiatives.
  • Proficiency in material planning software and ERP systems.
  • Excellent analytic and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Occasional travel to supplier sites and company locations as required.
