Job summary

The Human Rights Campaign is the nation’s leading LGBTQ+ civil rights and advocacy organization. The Director, Legal Policy (or Senior Director, commensurate with experience) partners with the Senior VP for Policy & Litigation to shape and execute strategic policy agendas and leads the Legal Policy team.

This hybrid/in-person role is based at HRC headquarters in Washington, DC, with expectation to be in the office at least three days per week.

Qualifications

• J.D. required and licensed to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• Minimum of 8 years of legal policy experience; 10+ years may qualify for Senior Director level.
• Deep knowledge of LGBTQ+ rights law and experience in public policy development.
• Demonstrated management and supervisory experience with team leadership and collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Oversee Legal Policy team's legislative and regulatory counsel work.
• Develop and lead comprehensive advocacy strategies in federal and state policy.
• Represent HRC externally with policymakers, coalitions, and stakeholders.
• Collaborate with internal partners to align policy goals with campaigns and communications.
• Provide strategic direction and governance for the department’s policy initiatives.
• Travel as needed to fulfill duties and engage with external partners.
