The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks a DIRECTOR-LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES to advance teaching and learning at UAB through the effective use of technology, ensuring that UAB s students and faculty benefit from the latest innovations in academic technology. To participate in the management of and provide direct support for the use of learning technology solutions that enable quality academic experiences and enhance student learning outcomes and student success. To evaluate the office s service portfolio and to provide vision and direction as the University s needs and opportunities change. To partner closely with the other directors and offices within the Provost s Office of Innovative Teaching and Academic Engagement in advancing academic goals and objectives. To provide top-level support and customer service to UAB s schools and colleges and to support, where possible, others who align with the mission of the Provost s office and UAB academic enterprise.
Applicants should expect a mix of strategic leadership, personnel management, project oversight, and campus partnership-building. The Director will likely spend time: supervising and mentoring a team with varied expertise (e.g., LMS administration, instructional technology, media production, accessibility support, or faculty support services); setting priorities and workflows for a service-oriented unit; managing vendor relationships, contracts, renewals, and budgets for major learning technology platforms; partnering with faculty, academic units, IT, disability support, compliance, and teaching and learning leaders; balancing immediate operational needs with long‑term planning and innovation. This is a role for someone who can move comfortably between big-picture strategy and operational detail.
Beyond the formal responsibilities, this position is a strategic and highly collaborative leadership role at the intersection of academic technology, accessibility, faculty support, and institutional change management. The Director of the Office of Learning Technologies is not only responsible for keeping systems and services running effectively, but also for helping shape how the university supports teaching and learning in a rapidly evolving digital environment.
