Job summary

UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay seeks a transformative Director, Labor & Delivery to lead operational excellence across the maternal-newborn spectrum, reporting to the Assistant Chief Nursing Officer.

You will manage 4 direct reports and 220 FTEs, advance Baby-Friendly initiatives, champion evidence-based practice, and evaluate emerging technologies to improve safety, quality and staff satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • BSN required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Active California RN license required.
  • Minimum of five years of nursing leadership experience within Labor & Delivery.
  • Experience in a unionized academic medical center and knowledge of Title 22 regulations and Magnet standards preferred.

Job description

Lead exceptional maternal care and nursing excellence at UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay as the next Director, Labor & Delivery.

The Position
  • The Director, Labor & Delivery will provide operational leadership for Labor & Delivery and associated perinatal services within a high-acuity academic medical center, overseeing care delivery through subordinate managers and ensuring safe, high-quality, patient-centered care across the maternal-newborn continuum in alignment with UCSF Health’s standards of excellence.
  • Reporting to the Assistant Chief Nursing Officer, this leader will oversee a team of four direct reports and 220 FTEs.
  • This leader will prioritize understanding UCSF Health’s organizational structure and culture while assessing opportunities for operational optimization, workforce restructuring, and leadership development, including the recruitment of at least one additional manager. Additionally, this individual will develop and implement a roadmap toward Baby-Friendly designation, promote evidence-based nursing best practices, and explore the strategic integration of emerging technologies, including AI-driven tools, to enhance patient care, staff efficiency, and clinical outcomes.
  • The ideal candidate will be a confident, steady leader with exceptional communication and relationship-building skills. This individual must be capable of mentoring and developing staff, fostering accountability, and challenging existing practices to drive innovation, operational excellence, and continued program growth.
Requirements

Compensation Range
  • The base salary range for this position is $250,000 to $278,000 annually. In addition, a leader may be eligible for other benefits, including but not limited to health insurance coverage, retirement benefits, and bonuses. The total compensation for the finalist selected for this role will be determined based on various factors, including but not limited to scope of role, level of experience, education, accomplishments, internal equity, budget, and subject to Fair Market Value evaluation. The base salary range listed above is a good faith determination of potential base compensation at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.
