Job description

At MFS, you will find a culture that supports you in doing what you do best. Our employees work together to reach better outcomes, favoring the strongest idea over the strongest individual. We put people first and demonstrate care and compassion for our community and each other. Because what we do matters – to us as valued professionals and to the millions of people and institutions who rely on us to help them build more secure and prosperous futures.

THE ROLE

The Director, Product Management serves as the Chief Product Owner (CPO) for Investment Data, and is accountable for translating MFS’s investment data technology strategy into an integrated roadmap and executable portfolio of work. The Enterprise Data Management Team’s purpose is to enable enhanced decision making, risk management and transparency by delivering dynamic, high-quality data and analytics to MFS employees and clients. Working as an integral part of the Enterprise Data Leadership Team, and in close partnership the broader technology organization and enterprise-wide business stakeholders, the Chief Product Owner plays a critical role in advancing broader data transformation, with a focus on ensuring that strategic investment data objectives are converted into clearly defined capabilities, priorities, and outcomes that teams can successfully deliver. The CPO serves as the primary coordination and integration point across Investment Data technology, and the translation layer between strategy and business outcomes, platform capabilities, and coordinated delivery execution. The role requires the ability to take broad or ambiguous goals and give them structure by defining the desired end state, identifying the major blocks of work required to achieve it, decomposing those blocks, and sequencing them into a roadmap that delivers measurable value. They must combine strong technical fluency and attention to detail with effective product leadership and strong teamwork skills, bringing clarity to business objectives, priorities, and desired outcomes while leading and developing a team of data product owners and fostering close collaboration across stakeholders and technology teams to shape effective solutions.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
Product Strategy & Roadmapping

Partner with the Head of Data to translate data strategy, priorities, and target capabilities into a clear multi-year roadmap. Take broad or ambiguous objectives and translate them into a structured path to the desired outcome, defining the major bodies of work, capabilities and epics, dependencies, sequencing, and measures of success required to deliver sustainable data products. Maintain a clear connection between strategic objectives, roadmap priorities, capacity constraints and executable work so product teams, delivery teams and stakeholders understand how individual initiatives contribute to broader business outcomes. Serve as the primary integration point for cross-functional Investment Data technology initiatives, aligning priorities, dependencies, and delivery efforts across teams to ensure coordinated execution and measurable outcomes. Ensure delivery initiatives reflect required governance obligations, data quality expectations, and stewardship responsibilities.

Stakeholder Partnership & Collaboration

Build strong relationships with stakeholders across the enterprise to understand objectives, workflows, pain points, and emerging data needs. Translate stakeholder needs into clearly desired outcomes, requirements, and practical definitions of success, including what “done” means from the consumer’s perspective. Support adoption and evolution of data products by ensuring platform capabilities translate into usable outcomes and incorporating consumer feedback and usage into ongoing priorities. Maintain transparency and alignment across stakeholders, leadership, and the Enterprise Data Team through clear, proactive communication of roadmaps, priorities, dependencies, risks, and key decisions. Identify and elevate unresolved conflicts and material tradeoffs through appropriate leadership forums.

Product–Technology Partnership & Delivery

Engage Tech Leads, architects, engineers, and analysts early in product discovery and planning to incorporate technical expertise, constraints, and opportunities into solution design. Foster strong partnership across product and delivery technology teams, balancing clear product direction with technical ownership, creativity, and accountability. Maintain strong agile and planning discipline while partnering across teams to deliver scalable, well-governed data products that help people and systems turn trusted data into timely insights, better decisions, and scalable automation.

Prioritization, Governance & Outcomes

Own and maintain an integrated, sequenced roadmap across data products and capabilities, balancing enterprise data strategy and adjacent strategic priorities, incremental business requests, dependencies, delivery capacity, risk, and architectural considerations. Facilitate prioritization and tradeoff decisions with the Enterprise Data Leadership team and across cross‑functional teams. Identify and surface gaps, overlaps, conflicts, and dependency risks that could affect successful execution. Define and track meaningful outcomes across the product lifecycle, including business impact, adoption, usability, data quality, reliability, timeliness, and operational efficiency.

Leadership, Communication & Team Effectiveness

Communicate roadmaps, risks, dependencies, decisions, and progress clearly, concisely, and in a way that is tailored to senior leaders, business stakeholders, and technical teams. Lead with strong judgment and emotional intelligence, particularly when navigating ambiguity, changing priorities, delivery challenges, feedback and strongly held viewpoints. Lead, coach, and develop a team of data product owners, providing clear direction, regular feedback, and performance management while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Foster a collaborative culture of shared accountability across Product, Data, Architecture, Engineering, and business teams.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Industry Experience & Education

15+ years of experience within asset management, financial services, or another data-intensive and highly regulated industry strongly preferred. Strong familiarity with investment management data, including security and issuer data, holdings, transactions, benchmarks, market data, performance, risk, analytics, and client data, is highly desirable. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; advanced degree, CFA and/or relevant professional qualifications are desirable.

Product & Leadership Experience

Significant experience leading data products, enterprise data platforms, or technology-enabled transformation in a complex organization. Strong product management and agile delivery experience, with demonstrated success operating across both strategic and execution levels. Demonstrated experience directly managing, coaching, and developing Product Owners, Product Managers, or similar professionals, including setting performance expectations, providing feedback, and building high‑performing teams.

Data & Technology Fluency

Strong technical fluency and demonstrated ability to develop deep subject‑matter expertise in enterprise data platforms, models, and tools such as Snowflake, dbt, Microsoft Azure, or comparable technologies. Strong understanding of modern data engineering, governance, quality, lineage, APIs, analytics, and the requirements for making enterprise data trusted and usable for AI and advanced analytics. Familiarity with relevant governance, analytics, and delivery platforms.

Leadership & Partnership

Proven ability to work effectively across business, Product, Data, Architecture, and Engineering, building alignment and influencing outcomes across organizational boundaries. Strong executive communication and stakeholder‑management skills, with the ability to simplify complex issues, navigate competing perspectives, and communicate decisions and tradeoffs clearly and concisely. High emotional intelligence, collaborative leadership style, and resilience in ambiguous or changing environments. Demonstrated ability to build trust, develop talent, delegate effectively, and create an environment where team members can exercise ownership, judgment, and accountability.
