Job summary

Fountain House is seeking a Director of Institutional Giving to grow public and private funding by identifying, securing, and stewarding grants. You will cultivate relationships with city, state, and federal funders and foundations, and supervise a Grant Writer to achieve fundraising goals.

Minimum 2 days per week on-site in Hell's Kitchen; onboarding may require greater on-site presence during the initial period. Requires leadership in proposal development and a strong writing background.

Qualifications

Your Impact

The overall role of the Director of Institutional Giving position is to grow public and private funding revenue by identifying, securing, and stewarding grant opportunities for Fountain House from new funding sources, and to strengthen current relationships. This position will cultivate relationships with private and public (city, state, and federal government) funders and other external partners to build support for Fountain House and its mission to help people living with serious mental illness overcome social isolation and build the community and the resilience needed to thrive in society.

Supervise and provide support and coaching in fundraising to staff members/ Grant Writers to achieve the agency's fundraising goals.

Salary: $100k - $110,000

Minimum x2 days per week on-site (Hell's Kitchen)

During the 3-month onboarding period, a greater on-site presence may be required

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning

• Work with the Senior Director of Institutional Giving to create a broad yearly development plan that aligns with the organization’s strategic focus areas/planning to create longer-term fundraising goals and a guide to reaching them.

Prospecting, Cultivation, Stewardship

• Continue to grow the public funding revenue of more than $22M in local and city and state government funding, while researching and responding to new opportunities for city, state, and federal funding that align with the agency's mission, goals, and existing programs.
• Research and develop an understanding of when relevant government funding opportunities will be released to create a process that will enable Fountain House to be prepared for these opportunities.
• Identify various types of public funding opportunities that are fit for Fountain House’s work including in areas of direct service, mental health, research, and other programming and strategic pillar fits.
• Steward an existing private Foundation portfolio while researching and responding to new opportunities that align with the agency's mission, goals, and existing programs. This includes overseeing the recognition and stewardship process in coordination with a grant writer. i.e., acknowledgment letters to foundation supporters etc.
• Coordinate application submission process in collaboration with grant writers, development team, and other departments external to development, including budgets and financial requirements.
• Supervise a Grant Writer creating goals and work plans that are in alignment with the annual fundraising plan.
• In coordination with grant writers, ensure that the production and submission of all external funder communications (Grant proposals, grant reports, etc.) are of exceptional quality and persuasive to funders. (This position will require the Director to both coordinate and participate in the writing process; therefore, an individual must possess strong writing skills.)
• Analyze and assess qualified prospects to determine which opportunities to pursue. This includes creating profiles of RFPs that provide a high-level summary of the funding opportunities to be shared with other departments actively involved in determining whether to move forward with the application process.
• Collaborate internally within the Development team and externally across departments, while leveraging Board connections to strategically plan how to approach prospects and opportunities.

Data and Process Management/Administrative

• Manage all renewals of current government and foundation grants in coordination with the grant writer.
• Record and track all activity and progress in Salesforce database, including prospecting, moves management, pipeline of opportunities/deliverables, grant management/admin/filing, etc.
• Maintain and regularly update the calendar of government and foundation deadlines (i.e., due dates for grant applications, reports, concept papers, etc.) in Salesforce and Asana database.
• Ensure contract compliance and complete all required grant reporting, including narrative and financial reports, working with program, research, finance, and other staff to ensure timely submission.

Other duties

• Contribute to the Development/Fundraising Strategic Plan and strategic planning process.
• Schedule, coordinate, and lead site visits with government prospects and foundation and partners
• Host/attend meetings and events and develop/deliver presentations with government prospects and foundations.
• Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor.

What you bring

• Undergraduate degree required.
• 5-7 years’ experience in nonprofit fundraising with a focus on government grants and private foundation fundraising at agencies with organizational budgets greater than $10,000,000 or comparable experience in growing and diversifying government and private revenue sources. Specifically, experience in grant writing, grant management, or related work within the field of nonprofit development/communication.
• Demonstrated success in securing public and private funding grants from city, state, or federal funding opportunities and private foundations.
• Knowledgeable in government contract application submissions, with impeccable attention to detail.
• Extensive project management experience with a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines under high-pressure situations.
• Experience in creating annual fundraising plans, and leading and motivating fundraising teams to execute projects.
• Experience in donor databases, such as Salesforce or similar CRM, as well as Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, Outlook, etc.) and internet research and prospecting skills.
• Experience with, and/or knowledge of, the public health, social justice, and mental health fields.
