Job Summary

The Fleet Director leads Core & Main's national fleet operations, driving operational excellence and transforming fleet processes, policies, and programs to build a modern, efficient, and scalable fleet organization. This role oversees strategy, asset lifecycle management, maintenance, compliance, vendor partnerships, and continuous improvement for a nationwide fleet of light-, medium-, and heavyduty vehicles.

The leader evaluates current operations, identifies improvement opportunities, and implements sustainable solutions that strengthen utilization, service levels, safety, compliance, and cost performance.

The ideal candidate is a handson, datadriven fleet expert with strong analytical skills and a proven ability to standardize processes, deploy technology, and lead organizational change across complex, multilocation operations.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities
  • Fleet Strategy: Develop and execute a multi-year fleet strategy aligned with Core & Main's operational, service, and financial objectives.
  • Process Optimization: Lead the transformation and continuous improvement of fleet processes, policies, and procedures to improve efficiency, reduce downtime, and enhance service levels.
  • Operational Leadership: Oversee day-to-day fleet operations, including vehicle acquisition, lifecycle management, maintenance, compliance, and utilization.
  • Fleet Governance & Standardization: Establish and maintain fleet policies, standards, controls, and operating procedures to ensure consistency, accountability, and compliance across all locations.
  • Vendor Management: Manage national and regional vendor relationships, negotiate contracts, and monitor performance against established service level agreements and business objectives.
  • Compliance Oversight: Ensure adherence to DOT, OSHA, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations while creating a culture of safety and risk mitigation
  • Data & Reporting: Develop and maintain dashboards, KPIs, and reporting tools that provide actionable insights and support data-driven decision-making.
  • Budget & Capital Management: Own fleet operating and capital budgets, forecasting, fleet replacement planning, and cost-reduction initiatives.
  • Asset Optimization: Develop fleet replacement, utilization, and lifecycle strategies to optimize capital investment and total cost of ownership.
  • Technology Enablement: Evaluate, implement, and optimize fleet management technologies, telematics, and automation tools to modernize operations and improve visibility.
  • Change Leadership: Lead cross-functional change initiatives, influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization, and drive adoption of new processes, technologies, and performance expectations.
  • CrossFunctional Collaboration: Partner with Operations, EHS, Finance, IT, HR and field leadership to align fleet priorities with business needs and strategic objectives.
  • Team Leadership: Lead, develop, and mentor a high-performing team while fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, customer service, and operational excellence.
Requirements
  • Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Operations Management, or related field.
  • 10+ years fleet/operations leadership with experience in transportation, logistics, or operations.
  • Proven process improvement & change leadership across multilocation environments.
  • Strong DOT, safety, and compliance knowledge.
  • Experience managing light-, medium-, and heavyduty fleets.
  • Expertise in maintenance coordination, lifecycle management, and replacement planning.
  • Data-driven decision-making with KPI development and performance analysis.
  • Proficiency with fleet systems, telematics, and reporting tools.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder influence in decentralized operations.
  • Preferred:
  • Industry experience in distribution, construction, utilities, or industrial services.
  • Experience supporting dispersed branch networks.
  • Knowledge of owned, leased, and rental fleet models.
  • Background implementing fleet technology (FMS, telematics, automation).
  • Strong financial acumen in budgeting, capital planning, and lifecycle costing.
  • Location Requirements:
    • Ability to work in-office a minimum of three days per week to support collaboration and operational alignment.
