Compensation Data

The base salary range for this position is $222,000 to $350,000. The position may be eligible for a role specific discretionary bonus, relocation, and/or other compensation elements. We continuously review market data and may adjust salary ranges as needed in the future. This role is based on-site at our Ridgefield, CT location with hybrid flexibility of 2-3 days per week on-site

The Director Evolving Trade & Specialty Channels is responsible for developing actionable insights and analyses that supports Trade and Specialty Distribution business decisions to improve patient access and Boehringer’s competitive position. This individual will assist the Director, Contract Channel Strategy to identify the appropriate distribution and dispense models for future pipeline products, including potential emerging, innovative, or disruptive models, to align with portfolio goals. This includes, but is not limited to Wholesaler, Specialty, Long-Term Care, GPO, and Retail channels. This individual will lead the development of the value proposition, help define each product’s trade channel strategy, and work cross-functionally to align channel services.

This role will require leadership to work cross functionally to understand the evolving channel landscape, market dynamics, and the shifting access paradigms that impact Boehringer and its customers.

The Director Evolving Trade & Specialty Channels will look across the portfolio to understand brand and therapeutic area strategies and objectives, as well as provide input to identify the optimal trade channel strategies across multiple product archetypes to improve patient access and drive commercial success.

This individual will be required to collaborate on the development of critical success factors and key metrics to evaluate the impact of channel strategies, distribution and dispense models. The individual must have a keen understanding of trade partners’ and customers’ business drivers and barriers, as well as the impact they have on Boehringer's commercial strategies. The individual will also be responsible for ensuring that innovative strategies reflect Boehringer's broader organizational goals.

The individual will have the responsibility for management of the tactical budget for initial novel trade channel implementations and will be responsible for collaborating with multiple functional groups, including but not limited to Marketing, Medical, Analytics and Insights, Legal, Public Relations, Health Care Affairs, Public Policy and various other value and access teams.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Evaluates Boehringer’s future product pipeline and develop optimal distribution and dispense models for various product archetypes, including primary care, specialty, orphan & rare disease, and cell & gene therapies products, some of which may require ultra cold chain or other special handling, Elements to assure Safe Use (ETASU), or non-traditional sites of care (e.g. Home Infusion).
  • Working cross-functionally with US Healthcare Affairs (HCA), provides SME insights on the Trade Channel that could impact the overall Enterprise.
  • Deciphers the MegaTrends that matter and integrate them into the Trade Channel Strategy to ensure the evolving healthcare landscape changes are not only identified, but a key consideration in how we plan our future strategies.
  • Advises the cross-functional Value & Access teams in emerging trends and disruptive events for product distribution, dispense and customer product value needs.
  • Provides strategic support for business case development, evaluation, and implementation.
  • Acts as Trade's representative on key cross-functional projects and processes to ensure a bi-directional flow of information that has implications for Integrated Asset Planning (IAP), Integrated Customer Planning (ICP) and ensures inputs from these strategic processes and innovative projects are reflected in Trade's Long-Term Forecast (LTF) submission.
  • Develops and maintains cross-functional synergies within Value & Access and other commercial functions such as Finance, Legal, Quality, Marketing, and Sales to maximize product success, compliance, and profitability.
  • Continuously stays abreast of brand strategies and provides solutions to optimize access, reimbursement, and distribution that can be leveraged across the portfolio.
  • Works closely with the Director, Trade Contract Strategy to ensure that channel challenges and opportunities are addressed in the Trade channel strategies at the individual brand, therapeutic area, and portfolio levels.
  • Provides insight into the data required to initiate models as well as unique data availability post-implementation.
  • Works closely with the Executive Director, Trade and Specialty Distribution to assess, benchmark and plan future Trade resource needs to meet future portfolio and customer distribution and dispense needs. This work should be based on emerging trends and pipeline requirements for Boehringer's future portfolio.
  • Acts as project manager for ad hoc and special projects within Trade and Specialty Distribution.
  • May also have initial responsibility as an account implementation manager for any special projects involving external customers until permanent transition to a Trade National Account Director.
Requirements
  • BA/BS degree required; MBA or other advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of pharmaceutical experience with at least five (5) years in Trade, Specialty, or Managed Markets with account management experience.
  • Must have a high-level understanding of the data needs and data opportunities derived from emerging models and develop key metrics to evaluate the impact and success of various models.
  • Detailed understanding of wholesalers, chain drugstores, specialty pharmacy and the pharmaceutical supply chain.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Successful track record of managing external vendors.
  • Strong knowledge of the commercial and government payor environment.
  • Strategic mindset and the ability to translate market conditions, product pipeline and supply chain factors into a scalable product access strategy.
  • Strong understanding of Trade processes and pharmaceutical regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to build relationships and expand company's presence with wholesalers & distributors.
  • Ability to monitor market shifts to anticipate and adapt strategies to accommodate evolving marketplace conditions.
  • Analytical skills, communication skills, learning and adaptability, leadership skills required (both leading a team and playing leadership role in the primary care / specialty franchise), influencing skills (working across internal stakeholders in Ridgefield and Ingelheim, as well as external stakeholders in the specialty and payer community.
  • Ability to work with all levels of management both internal/external.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
