Job summary

The Center for American Progress is seeking a Director for its Disability Justice Initiative within the Rights and Justice department. This on-site role in Washington, DC, leads research, policy development, and advocacy to advance disability rights and equity.

The ideal candidate will have 7–10 years in disability policy, strong leadership, and deep knowledge of ADA, Medicaid, and related programs, with a commitment to CAP’s mission and bold, progressive ideas.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in public policy, social work, law, or related field; master's degree preferred.
  • 7–10 years of experience in disability policy/advocacy with leadership experience.
  • Strong knowledge of disability rights laws incl. ADA, Medicaid, Social Security.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication; strong project management.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Disability Justice Initiative team with strategic direction and mentorship.
  • Develop and advance a policy agenda protecting and expanding disability rights.
  • Oversee research, analyze legislation, and inform policy recommendations.
  • Lead external engagement, coalitions, and advocacy with stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders to set priorities and ensure timely deliverables.
  • Oversee budgets, fundraising activities, and cross-department coordination.
