WH Wheeling Hospital Inc. seeks an experienced Nursing Education and Training leader to plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive education programs across WVU Medicine System and WVU Hospitals. This role focuses on staff development, nursing leadership competency, and partnership with leadership for practice transitions.

The position requires a Master’s in Nursing (or related field), an RN license (state or eNLC), and 5 years of nursing plus 3 years in leadership. Doctorate preferred.

Qualifications

  • Current RN license in state or eNLC is required.
  • Five years nursing experience with at least two years in teaching/learning.
  • Three years of leadership or supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees planning, development, management, and evaluation of clinical education training programs and curriculum.
  • Develops education plans utilizing multiple modalities to impact learning needs.
  • Implements standardized hire and annual competency model.
  • Facilitates professional development and ensures staff competence with orientation and onboarding.
  • Guides Nursing Services Orientation/onboarding for new clinicians, including mentoring program.
  • Ensures documentation of education and training in the Learning Management System.
  • Serves as a consultant to system hospital education departments and leadership.
  • Partners with leaders to align educational programs with organizational goals.

Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating Nursing and Clinical education programs, training programs, development programs, and assigned special training projects of the WVU Medicine System and West Virginia University Hospitals. Establishes direction of strategic programs and services, and manages the budget associated with programming and service, policies, and practices of the function. Partners with contacts to ensure orientation, competency and education of nursing areas of the organization. Provides support and service at WVU Hospitals by providing staff development expertise as a Learning facilitator, Change agent, Mentor, Leader, Champion for scientific Inquiry, Advocate for the NPD specialty, and Partner for Practice Transitions. Provides expert level internal consultation to all levels of management and work groups related to clinical education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or related field.
  • Current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or current multi-state Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
EXPERIENCE
  • Five (5) years nursing experience with at least two (2) years of which provided experience with teaching/learning methodologies is required.
  • Three (3) years of leadership or supervisory experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctorate Degree in Nursing or related field.
  • Certification in Nursing Professional Development or specialty.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works in collaboration with the Leadership to ensure harmonization of practice, competence, development and across the WVU System and WVU Hospitals.
  • Oversees the planning, development, management, and evaluation of clinical education training programs and curriculum for employees of WVU Hospitals.
  • Develops, plans and implements nursing learning needs assessment, disseminates results to leadership and develops educational plans utilizing multiple modalities to impact learning needs.
  • Implements a standardized hire and annual competency model.
  • Facilitates the professional development of all staff and ensures competence by providing tools and templates for orientation, initial/hire and ongoing competence.
  • Guides planning and execution of Nursing Services Orientation/onboarding for new clinical employees, including a formal mentoring program.
  • Develops plans to ensure nursing leadership development and competency.
  • Ensures consistent documentation of education, competency and training in the Learning Management System
  • Guides planning and execution of American Heart Association courses.
  • Serves as a consultant and mentor to system hospital education departments and leadership by providing resources and developing education plans.
  • Acts as a consultant to leaders to guide planning and execution of educational needs, implementing new practices, designing processes and implementing organizational strategies.
  • Serves as a consultant to the nursing shared governance councils.
  • Oversees the Continuing Education Provider Unit to offer ANCC nursing continuing education credits.
  • Engages in strategic and performance improvement planning and responsible for the execution of that plan that impacts Nursing and Clinical education.
  • Facilitates a plan for nursing academic experiences.
  • Engages in fiscal activities in order to ensure the availability of supplies, equipment, and human resources to meet clinical education needs in a timely cost effective manner.
  • Determines strategic direction of clinical programs and services to ensure alignment with organizational needs and goals.
  • Supports an environment for innovation, creativity and empowerment with patient care delivery based on current best practice, literature and research.
  • Serves as a consultant to other departments within WVUH and other health care institutions, agencies, professional organizational colleagues in matters related to orientation, continuing education, staff development, competency validation and education.
  • Participates in planning and implementing changes to improve productivity and decrease costs, through participating in meetings, task forces and committees.
  • Collaborates in designing educational plans and providing specialized expertise in the application of teaching/learning principles within the organization.
  • Identifies current and anticipates future educational needs and develops strategic sustainable plans.
  • Serves as a change agent in effecting appropriate changes within the health care delivery system.
  • Builds and expands personal and professional expertise by contributing to the growth of knowledge in the field of nursing, education and development.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Involves regular physical effort such as lifting and transporting materials and equipment of at least twenty pounds, stooping, pushing heavy carts, equipment, etc.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
  • Office, classroom environment.
  • Travel may be required to facilitate collaboration across all entities in the WVU Medicine System.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Capable of translating strategy into specific goals, action plans, and deliverables by utilizing principles, methods and tools according to the Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Practice model.
  • Proficient in the Standards of NPD practice, including onboarding/orientation, competency management, education, role development, collaborative partnerships, and Research/Evidenced based practice and Quality Improvement.
  • Acts in the following Nursing Professional development roles, Learning facilitator, Change agent, Mentor, Leader, Champion for scientific Inquiry, Advocate for the NPD specialty, and Partner for Practice Transitions.
